Review: Lenovo Thinkpad X1
If you are an avid follower of Lenovo products, then you should have noticed an arrival of the much awaited Lenovo Thinkpad X1. The good news is you need not wait any longer and that is because the latest slim notebook from Lenovo is finally out and it is priced at $1349. Of course, this notebook boasts of the popular red nub and a solid construction. There are some other details Thinkpad X1 that are very interesting like the Gorilla Glass display (13.3 inches) and the integrated battery that is fast charging. It also uses a button-less trackpad. This laptop is also the thinnest of all the Thinkpads made with the thinnest point only at around 0.65 inches, or 16.5 mm.
Design
The Thinkpad X1 looks and feels like a regular Thinkpad model . If you have seen or used the X Series of notebooks from the brand, you would be familiarized with the soft and rubbery finish. Now, the design of Thinkpad X1 was made more seamless by using the same texture to the sides. Though it is not really a gauge of durability, it still gives this particular edge for looking more chic and premium, just as we would expect. The boxy shape of the Thinkpad X1 was tapered down but it still has a wedge shape around the back part of the chassis where the hinge is located. Though it weighs around 3.7 lbs, or 1.68 kg, it still is very easy to hold with one hand. Another great addition of this notebook is the 720p web camera. When it comes to image quality, it is quite good for a web cam.
Looking at the keyboard and touchpad, the Thinkpad X1 had a facelift in these departments. Now, you can enjoy typing on a chiklet keyboard that is backlit and is spill proof. You might also find the button less trackpad. Do not worry, even with the design changes, they still have that concave shape and sturdy paneling that we have come to love from Lenovo, the clicks are also superb. The trackpad of Thinkpad X1 still has some issues when doing right or left clicks, which is a disadvantage of the integrated trackpad.
Sound and screen
The Gorilla Glass screen of Lenovo Thinkpad X1 is a scratch resistant screen. It measures at 13.3 inches but the glossy finish makes it hard to enjoy the whole screen real estate because it washes out the color on the sides due to the reflections. That is one aspect that does not make Thinkpad X1 notebook on the cut. When it comes to resolution, it seems like it was a downgrade from the Thinkpad X301 with 1440×900 to 1366×768 in the Thinkpad X1. Screen does offer nice viewing angles though. This is great for general browsing and computing. When it comes to the sound, the Dolby speakers are very good and they offer clear and good quality sounds, especially for a notebook of this size.
Graphics and performance
If you purchase Lenovo Thinkpad X1 with the Intel Core i5, the price will be at around $1399 with the integrated Intel HD 3000, 4GB RAM, and 320GB hard disk drive. This is really made for general use, mainly for business types who would normally type and browse the web and files. When it comes to gaming, Lenovo Thinkpad X1 is pretty decent but not as high as you would expect from other notebooks at this price range.
Overall
When you take a look at the thin, robust and solid construction of the Thinkpad X1, you will be smitten by it. It performs briskly and it gives a really good and solid function and performance. Since it is made for business, it offers all the basic necessities that executives might need, but Thinkpad X1 will perform beautifully as an everyday personal computer.
