NTT DOCOMO has officially launched its Starlink Direct service. Through a collaboration with SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies), DOCOMO will utilize Starlink’s mobile satellite infrastructure to provide enhanced connectivity.

This “satellite-to-device” communication service officially began operations on April 27, 2026.
The service covers the entirety of Japan and its territorial waters (extending 12 nautical miles from the coastline).
Pricing: The service is currently available free of charge across all pricing plans.
Access: No formal application or sign-up process is required for existing subscribers.
Updates: DOCOMO will provide further notice should there be any changes to the service’s terms and conditions.
Technical Specifications
The service utilizes 4G LTE technology for the service link. By leveraging existing mobile standards, the service ensures compatibility with standard devices without the need for specialized hardware.
| Feature | Specification |
| Communication Standard | 4G LTE |
| Frequency Band | 2 GHz (Band 1) |
| Bandwidth | 5 MHz |
Spectrum Reallocation
The 2 GHz band was made available following the discontinuation of 3G (W-CDMA) services, which freed up 5 MHz of bandwidth. While this required a reconfiguration of the existing LTE layout, the spectrum has been effectively repurposed to facilitate seamless direct satellite communication.
