Review: Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 11

Blurring the lines between the consumer laptops and business laptops, Lenovo offers the Thinkpad Edge 11, an 11.6 inch laptop. It has both the touchpad and pointing stick that is in the middle of its keyboard. It has a chicklet keyboard that is very much similar to the business laptop keyboards that they have. The lid is quite glossy but it is resistant to fingerprints so that is a plus. The price is at $665 in the US. However, this one is not available in the US. This model boasts of 11.6 inch screen, the Intel core i3 processor, a display of 1366×768 pixels, RAM of 2GB And 250GB of storage. Since this is more a business class laptop, it was implemented with Windows 7 Professional. It can also be available with the AMD.

Upon first look, you will never guess that Edge 11 is from the Thinkpad family. It is quite boxy and it has quite sharper, angular edges. The glossy lid with the chrome on the sides does not really exude a business type laptop that usually is dark and matte. Nonetheless, if you take a look at it, the design is really no nonsense. As you might have guessed, it can work as your business laptop but you can also enjoy its features for personal entertainment. The keys that they used for the full sized keyboard is chicklet style so there is better use of space. The keyboard is quite easy to use and you will find it comfortable to type and get used to. At the top of the keyboard, you will find a number of functions to adjust the computer like the volume, settings, media playback and the screen brightness. On the sides, you will find a number of slots and ports. There is the HDMI and 3 USB ports, SD slot, Ethernet slot, and the jack for the headphones. When you open the Edge 11, you will see that it can tilt backwards close to 180 degrees. Well that seems like alright but I have never heard of anyone who would do such a thing but at least, you will know that the hinge is strong enough. The screen is not best viewed on sunlight since it glares so much you can actually see yourself more than the image on screen.

Performance

The Core i3 inside Lenovo makes it one of the more robust and better laptops of its kind in the market. Though the i5 and i7 are already making waves, the Core i3 seems to be quite nice since it is less expensive but can offer smooth computer performance. The Edge 11 does pack some power that you will definitely love. It is really fast and when bench marked with other laptops in the same category, it had faster video transcode time, audio transcode and folder zip time. The graphics and processor test and it worked really well. In terms of the 3D graphics, the benchmark test proves that the laptops with NVIDIA tend to be way faster than the Edge 11. Nonetheless, many business people will not really use the Edge 11 for playing games and will possibly use this more for doing videos, presentations, and documents and for mail and browsing.

Battery life

The battery of the Edge 11 sticks out at the back and ideally means more. However, that is not really the case. The battery life is a disappointing 4 hours, 20 minutes and that is not even good enough to get most tasks done since that was on the lowest power settings. That means doing work while on the road might be a little inconvenient. Overall, the Edge 11 from Lenovo is a decent laptop that offers nice features. Sadly it might be best for work near an outlet due to its ridiculous battery life. It is good for everyday use and is robust enough to work for your everyday needs.
