Mozilla new OS – Boot 2 gecko
Browser giant Mozilla is working on a new totally web-based OS codenamed Boot 2 Gecko. Screenshots of the B2G UI have appeared on the Mozilla wiki and reveal an icon-based OS similar to Apple iOS, further proof that the cyberworld is ‘going mobile’. Developers are still testing B2G, building new APIs for camera, phone and SMS functionality. It’s essentially a mobile OS, and developers are hammering out the code to deliver a fully-functional beta version by the end of the year.
Notable features so far include launching apps with a simple swipe, and the option of choosing between hardware or non-physical buttons for Back and Menu buttons and such like. Reports from Mozilla itself say the OS will be powered by HTML5 with Android limited to booting and drivers, which should keep it nice and quick. The mobile market is certainly awash with OS’s at the moment, not to mention proprietary skins on top of Android. But if anyone can pull it off it’s Mozilla.
