Hard Drive Supply Problems Push Up Prices
Floods in Thailand have led to the price of hard drives doubling in some outlets. Floods last week caused the closure of factories producing hard drives and other computer components. At many retailers Samsung flagship 1TB Spinpoint F3 hard drive has doubled in price in the space of a few days. Industry watchers hope this will only be a short-term panic measure, rather than spreading throughout the industry to drive up the price of notebooks and netbooks.
Other hard drives have jumped in price, but experts put it down to a few sly sellers trying to exploit consumers’ uncertainty over long-term supply. Retailers have reported rises in prices of PCs of around $50 in a week. Normally only high-end graphics cards are in such short supply, but some retailers expect reduced supplies for the next six months. Prices for a 2TB drive have risen $60-150 in some stores. Acer says the floods will hit their revenue in the next quarter, and prices will have to rise to reflect the bottleneck in the entire computer industry.
