HP has announced the HP Envy x2 Windows 8 tablet, though it won’t reach the US before December. Envy x2 is intended as an entry-level convertible, offering both tablet and standard laptop functionality. The x2′s screen slides away from the keyboard and its magnetic connectors, and when in place is held fast by a latch.
Star feature is the Clover Trail Atom Z2760 CPU, base clock 1.8GHz across two hyper-threaded cores, and the integrated GPU is clocked at an impressive 533MHz. No word on RAM but most likely 2GB DDR2 800MHz RAM, which is the maximum memory supported by the Z2760 CPU. For storage HP’s new convertible will pack in a 64GB SSD.
The x2′s display is an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 pixel LED panel. Dual-band WiFi is supported for uncongested anytime-anywhere net access, and the Envy x2 also supports NFC for the latest in wireless syncing and communication. WiFi and Bluetooth are also incorporated.
The HP with keyboard attached weighs 3.1 pounds, but leave the keyboard and its fair-sized trackpad behind and the HP Envy x2 gets a lot more portable.
On the friont HP have stuck a 1080p HD TrueVision webcam and on the rear of the x2 is an 8MP rear-facing camera; those are the highest camera specifications supported by the Clover trail Atom line-up of chips, so again, HP is pushing the boat out with this one. Crucially, the HP Envy x2 will be running Windows 8 on an Intel x86-based CPU, meaning opting for the x2 over other less expensive Win 8 devices will give you the option of running desktop-based Windows 8 software.
USB ports are of the 2.0 variety – slightly slower but not a deal-breaker by any means. There are also an SD card slot and HDMI connector. Beats Audio stereo speakers add to the allure of the Envy x2, but it’s that good-sized Scrabble-tile keyboard and multi-touch tackpad which will catch the eye of many a mobile worker.
As for price, we just don’t know at this stage. Somewhere around the $700-800 mark is a reasonable estimate.
