How unique is Blackberry 10? What are RIM’s chances of regaining lost clientele and what user group should it target?

Blackberry Z10 becomes available in UK, while US and other countries have to wait till March to get it.

Just how unique is Blackberry Z10? At the first glance it looks like any other touch-screen device. It has no buttons to speak of and to start it, one needs to swipe upwards from the bottom bezel. Home Screen may look like any other home screen with large icon links like in android, iOS or Windows Phone 8. People Hub stands out as it pulls all notifications together similar to windows phone’s notifications, but unlike android or iOS. In People Hub you may find emails, text messages, posts of your social media sites, BlackBerry messenger and other notifications neatly and coherently assembled in one screen. Many may find this organization useful, but by itself People Hub won’t win over many consumers.

Time-shifting camera is an awesome feature as well. 8MP camera takes countless bursts spread apart by milliseconds to offer you a chance to correct things in your final picture. If you decide you’re not happy about your dog yawning in your last picture, or daughter closing her eyes in your picture, BB 10 allows you to scroll over many iterations or your photo, to decide which one is best. Again neat feature, but Jelly Bean already has the Best Face feature.

Blackberry 10 offers BlackBerry Balance. This is where BB Z10 and upcoming Q10 really make a difference. At least to corporate world. Swiping, like at the startup, from the bottom upwards, allows you to switch over from personal side of the phone to a corporate one. RIM, or shall we say Blackberry now, has made it impossible to copy and paste stuff from corporate to personal side. This will no doubt appeal to many companies.

Security is another winning ticket for Blackberry 10. It is the only operating system available to mobile devices today that is FIPS certified as safe and secure os for government communications.

Consumers have many choices these days and both android and iOS have a slew of apps that Blackberry 10 cannot hope to compete with. Winning a consumer market over competing with iOS and android is going to be as Guardian’s Charles Arthur puts it, “an uphill battle”. Winning over lost corporate clients and building on the 79 million loyal clients may be where Blackberry should focus their efforts.

As BlackBerry and Apple strive to impress the corporate world, so do Samsung’s enterprise market efforts
