Asus G51JX-X3 – Review

Asus G51JX-X3

With manufacturers incorporating the second-generation Intel quadcore processors into their latest machines the old crop of notebooks is being heavily discounted so here’s one we missed first time around. The Asus G51 JX is a member of Asus  Republic of Gamers range, which also includes the 17.3″ G73JH and G73JW.  Now there’s a cute G51JX-X3 15.6″ version.

The Asus G51JX-X3 comes in a deep blue color, and offers a typically impressive Asus display. Growling under the hood is an Intel Core i5-430M processor and a 500 GB 7200rpm hard disk. Unfortunately, the G51JX-X3 only ships with 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, though it will support up to 8 GB.

Obviously gaming laptops need a high-performing GPU, and the X3′s Nvidia GeForce 1 GB GTS 360M doesn’t disappoint.  Hardcore gamers might opt for the 17.3″ G73JH with its ATI Radeon 5870, but for its price the G51JX-X3 is very capable and good value. The G51JX is well supplied with sockets for gadgets and peripherals – four USB2 ports and an HDMI-out socket.

The back-Asus G51JX-X3lit keyboard is a nice touch, even if the keys are slightly slippery. In benchmark tests this notebook achieves the best score in the sub-$1000 category. Anyone wanting a 14-inch gaming notebook will be delighted with this machine at the price.
