Android Tablets need more apps

  • Sharebar

A lot of Android tablets released in the last few months were really good; one of them was the Motorola Xoom with a very solid quality, a snappy processor and beautiful screen. As a tablet device or general mobile tool, it is exceptional. However, if you have a mobile phone, like the iPhone, you would probably be holding it more compared to the Xoom. This is not a matter of size. It is a matter of Android tablets not having enough apps that are optimized for the system. Distimo survey clearly shows great improvements in this aspect especially when it comes to free apps, but it’s still no iOS.

When you take a look at the Google Android 3.0, it is a lot better compared to 2.2 when it comes to usage on tablet devices. It has the built in applications like a web browser, Gmail, and of course, the Android Market. The software makes use of Xoom’s quality resolution. Compared to the keyboard in 2.2, the 3.0 seems to be much better. Let us set everything straight right here: Android has hundreds and thousands of applications already, a whopping number, but only a few of them are actually optimized for the Honeycomb. Some apps, like numerous games are not affected by the shift to large screens since they were designed for big screens. However, most apps created for Android were still stuck on the 4 inch format even until now.

One app we can take as a sample is the VEVO app. When you use this on the Motorola Xoom, the video quality weakens. This is optimized for small screens and even if you tap on high quality, you will only get some very little change with a large screen. An even bigger issue is that even till now, the VEVO app is still stuck with the small screens. The interface is not optimized. There are spaces that could have been utilized. When you open this app, it only functions in Portrait mode. The videos will only be oriented in landscape mode.

It is not only VEVO that looks lousy on Android 3.0. New York Times also looks nasty with its minute texts and pictures but at least you can address this by means of resizing.

If you take a look at the WordPress App, they, too, never seemed to have gotten the memo that the Android 3.0 is for large screen tablets already. There is poor use of screen real estate and it just does not make sense on a tablet. Check out this video review of WordPress App.

One of them is the CNN app that adjusts to higher resolution and wider screens. You can also depend on Pulse News Reader to offer a unique way to read news. Amazon also released a new app for Kindle that has been optimized for 3.0 but it could do much better if the landscape format has a 2 pane setup. If you like to manage Reddit articles, you should take a look at Reddita that is really fun and easy to use so it makes more sense in tablets than in desktop computers.
