Smartphone And Tablet Market Share 2011
Millenial Media, fresh from filing its IPO, is currently the largest independent ad network, and has just published a report on smartphones on its network in 2011. Android Impressions grew 500% on an annual basis during the period.
In 2011 Android made up 47% of device operating systems on Millenial Media’s network, whereas Apple’s iOS accounted for 33%. In 2010, iOS was the top OS with 41%, with Android next on 30%. Of all the ads served up by Millenial Media, the iPhone was still way out front with 15% of total mobile impressions, although its share of total impressions fell 7% compared with 2010.
Apple iPad impressions increased significantly from 2010 to 2011, and Samsung was number two device manufacturer for the second year running. HTC grew by 79% in terms of ad impressions for 2011, taking third place overall.
WiFi expanded rapidly, growing 21% compared with 2010, and was the connectivity method used for 27% of ads served by Millenial Media in 2011. The report also breaks down ads served into app categories, revealing that gaming apps grew 16% year-on-year to become the number one trigger for ads on the network. Music and Entertainment apps were pushed into second place, while news apps grew 66% compared with 2010.
