Why Apple iPad does NOT suck

  • Sharebar

After watching plethora of websites pre-maturely dismissing iPad as a glorified iPhone, I am forced to clear some misconceptions about the iPad.

  1. It does not support Multi-Tasking: Yes, it does sucks that a tablet which is about the size of a netbook (width-wise) cannot multi-task. But, the upcoming iPhone 4.0 OS will bring in the functionality to multi-task
  2. No Flash integration in Safari web-browser: Seriously, who needs to watch flash video in a tiny window or do you want to watch those Google ads that require flash plugin? I know, YouTube requires flash and YouTube app is included which works like a charm. Even if Adobe releases an in-browser flash plugin for the iPad, I would love to turn it off. I am using Flash block in Firefox on my netbook to stop the flash content from running when the page is loaded (as it simply slows down the whole system).
  3. Input: Some are saying that it is difficult to enter data on iPad. Since when was data entry fun on a tablet? iPad is a sofa device, not your netbook or notebook.

For those who don’t know, HTC tried to implement flash in the web-browser in the HTC Hero and it slowed down the whole device considerably when viewing a webpage using flash

However, I personally do admit that it does costs a Benjamin more than the netbooks that you see around. But, then Apple products have never been cheap, unless you are talking about their iPod range.

I am going to disagree here. The reason is that the device is just not enough today. You are right that they will add multitasking, but by then netbooks will have improved as well. If you look at it today, it’s a no brainer. The netbook is not a “Benjamin” less, it’s much less money for much more.

To begin to compare the iPad to a netbook you need to go to the $829 model. For $829 you get 64Gb of storage and connectivity. For $299 on a netbook you can get a 160-200 Gb hard drive along with 2Gb of RAM memory. In addition, it runs a full version of the OS and thus runs real applications and not just mobile apps.

You are correct that the iPad hits a different audience. However, that audience is the book reader audience. It’s not an all in once device (as I had hoped for) and it seems pricy to me for what it does. If this device were $199 for the base version and $399 for the top version then I migh see it being an addition to peoples computer arsenal sitting between an iPhone and laptop. But if this unit is as expensive as a laptop then I don’t think it will get much attention.

Finally, I think that they need to get some better form of text entry. I was an apple Newton user back in the day and the hanwrighting entry was very cool. You would think that 15 years later they could have blown this away on a new device. Yet it is a step backward. Bummer.

    @fixyourtitle um, huh?

  3. Apple fan iPad hater says:

Obviously you don’t surf the web much. The world is not all youtube and banner ads. While we’re on the subject who really cares about youtube and why should that be the litmus test for all things flash.

There are hundreds of amazing sites, games, and apps done in Flash. Let’s say I want to surf to fox.com oops there’s flash. How about hulu.com oops there’s flash. How about newgrounds.com to play some game… guess what more flash.

Saying we don’t need one of the most important plug-ins going 10 years strong is ridiculous.

    Another Fanboy site. lol.
This will be cheaper and have all the features that bloody pad is missing.

It is not fanboy-ism. We think better ;)

  6. GreenOpenMonster says:

    You’ve got it wrong.

IPad is to the Iphone, like how PSP Go! is to the PSP-1000. In other words: EPIC FAIL.

    The IPad. It Sucks. Period.

Hey kamal, you removed my comment but glad that you fixed the title ;-)

lol, a fanboy trying to defend his new toy. We don’t need flash! lol. Gotta love Steve Jobs in being able to sell mediocre products for insane amounts of money to mindless sheep, who will buy whatever he offers without question.

So it is like the iPhone without the phone bit and it is like a laptop missing multitasking or being able to change say excel spreadsheets (not to mention that surfing the web without flash will be a pain). 10 hours of battery life do not cover long distance flights (some people have to travel for work) and you can’t change the batteries.

iPods being cheap? What did I miss? Sony offers its superior Walkman for $40 to $50 less than the equivalent iPod Nano. So for less money you get a device with a superior sound quality and a built in equalizer (nothing special really, but no iPod has that neat little function) amongst other advantages.

I’d still love to be Steve for his rare salesman’s ability.

  9. Wilson says:

Sigh, guess I’ll have to say what most people never though about. Here goes.

When the first iPhone first came out, everyone said it was just an iPod touch with a phone function. Waste of battery, no flash, expensive, blah blah blah.
In the end, at least everyone has an iPhone. Why, because it’s trendy!
It doesn’t matter how bad it is, as long as your friend has one, you want one!

  10. Kamal DS says:

Same case as with MacBooks. They are overpriced, yet you see so many folks buying them

  11. I believe iPad still needs a lot of revision and iteration to come to what people expected it to be. Like we’ve seen from Apple, it’s their marketing technique to put the features we desire one by one in their every refresh. The outcome, hog of attentions which their really like.

Here is some of the major drawback the iPad have for now which I posted at techgeeze.com find it here: Apple iPad deal-breaking disappointments

  12. Jay says:

Like most Apple products, it’s not what you can do (er I mean can’t do) with it, it’s how cool you think you look pulling one out at your local Starbucks thinking you look important.

The thing is, anyone using one of these iPads can’t possibly be gettting any work done on one. Apple is no longer a computer company, but a toy company, and not a very good one at that.

  13. wpuser says:

For those of you saying that iPad sucks, you probably have never used it. I used mine today and I love it. The display is great, I can type fast and easily on it, and the iBooks and iWork are extremely cool. Plus, the iPad is super fast.

  14. Kajon says:

I bought an Ipad two weeks ago. I use it for email, and as a photographers helper as when taking shots in the wild its nice to see them on the big display rather than the small one on my camera. I dont have to bring my laptop out and that saved me on time. However, no flash is a real pain for sure, the virtual keyboard sucks, and the wifi cuts out a lot. No, I did not bother getting the 3g one as I have att cell service and I did not want to open another can of worms on that. For my uses it works, but I use it in a niche capacity that most users won’t. Overall they would probably be happier with a netbook
