Review: Apple iPad 2

  • Sharebar

ipad-2When it comes to Apple products, we can say that there is a trend with their offerings: they always update with kick ass hardware improvements. The iPad 2 is no exception. The entire body was overhauled and improved. It has become a lot thinner and lighter making it the sleekest and sexiest tablet computer of recent times. Imagine holding a tablet that is 0.34 inch thin. That is an innovation already considering that it has a lot of processing power inside (more on that later). The front is all screens, save for the home button and the small dot of a camera at the other end. The back is made of aluminum. There is a camera on the top left side and the speakers on the lower left. There is a slot for the microSIM and other standard ports and buttons for the iPad. You can also opt for a white or black bezel.

Internal

The iPad 2 was not just improved outside. People are also very much interested of what t has inside that makes it essentially different. First, the processor has been improved from the A4 to A5 that is a 1GHz dual core chip. The RAM is at 512 MB which is quite low on current standards already. The screen has 1024×768 pixels similar to the first iPad. It would have been much better if the screen resolution was revamped to offer much better color and depth to books. Let us take a look at wireless connectivity. The iPad 2 offers Wi-FI, 3G and Bluetooth. There is the accelerometer, 3 axis gyroscope and light sensor.

Performance

Looking at the benchmarks on some popular sites, you can see that the iPad offers more processing power with the help of the 1GHz dual core A5 chip. It is a lot faster and snappier compared to the previous iPad. That means eat can handle a lot of complex programs (more on that later).

Battery

Apple promises to offer better battery life for the iPad 2. Though it seems to have been trimmed for optimum functionality, the battery life is still the same capacity as before. The battery life of this new generation tablet is stellar, with more or less 10 hours of power. You can say that iPad 2 really outdid itself when it comes to battery power.

Cameras

Now let us see how the new camera additions fare. They are not really the best quality cameras. They are average and they did not use the best sensors. At least the camera was highlighted and given a lot of purpose on the iPad 2. Now, you can do video calling. It is just sad that Apple has to downgrade on the camera quality when it could choose to provide better camera options.

Software

The new update on the OS makes the browsing experience zippier than ever. On top of that, additional software has been added: iMovie and Garageband. On top of that, there is the FaceTime/ PhotoBooth that you can use to get better usage of the cameras. They may be much better in quality if you use professional lighting.

Competition

IPad2 is not as far beyond its competition contrary to popular believe. iPad Site compared iPad2 to its competitors and well, the market is catching up. Another very useful tool is this comparison chart by Liliputing.
