HP WebOS Future Uncertain

HP is planning to keep HP Personal Systems Group, the world’s largest PC division. Amongst the dramatic measures taken by HP recently-sacked CEO Leo Apotheker was the decision to discontinue the HP TouchPad. Mr Apotheker also decided to buy British software company Autonomy. Meg Whitman, HP’s new CEO, has promised to re-examine all three decisions. It seems HP will continue to manufacture PCs. She says:

“HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG,” Whitman said. “It’s clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees. HP is committed to PSG, and together we are stronger.”

A final decision on the future of WebOS has not yet been made. In August HP abandoned the HP TouchPad tablet and its Palm smartphones, beginning a fire sale of stockpiles. Now Whitman says webOS may be completely overhauled rather than ditched. However, for the moment HP is working on a Windows 8 tablet. So perhaps WebOS will be quietly resurrected in the future.
