Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 on Sony Vaio UX
A female geek from Liliputer installed the latest Ubuntu 10.04 on her amazing Vaio UX180 UMPC. However, it is even more exiting to see most of the components working straight out-of-the-box.
- Touchscreen immediately recognized but required calibration
- Sound working
- The webcam did not work and required manual driver installation. The correct driver can be found here: http://www.palmix.org/r5u870-en.html. The driver version is for kernel 2.6.30: i386 (32bit). If you need instructions on how to install the driver, visit the link given at the bottom of this post
- Rest everything worked without a problem
Note – Although this Sony UMPC has faded-away from the market, it still packs quite a punch and has the ability to give the current crop of netbooks tough competition in terms of raw power and performance.

I installed ubuntu 10.04 netbook version on my Sony U-series UMPC (an older model than the UX). Only the wubi install worked and I had to install off a CD since it doesn’t feature booting from USB. But touchscreen recognized except that it needs calibration. Anyone have the required config script?
Tablets are not my game, but I suggest you take a look at this: http://gadgetmix.com/index/archos9-ubuntu/
Hi I too am keen on installing ubuntu 10.04 onto a UX17 with limited 512Mb RAM. Done small testes with the live install. Was wondering how did you calibrate the touch screen? what software did you use. Also I like to use my UX rotated 90 degrees. But when I do this, the mouse pointer controls and touch screen are not rotating with the screen. Also something handy to use would be an onscreen keyboard that supports working in portrait mode.
Many thanks

steve, to calibrate your ux download this egalax_calibrator_x11
Works a treat. Still trying to find a way to run the digitizer in portrait mode, while the screen is set in portrait mode
