Lower-priced Ultrabooks Through Downsizing

The ultrabook format hasn’t quite taken off yet, probably due to the high price tags being asked by manufacturers.

Digitimes claims notebook OEMs are planning less expensive models of ultrabooks to widen their appeal. Supply chain vendors are apparently producing cheaper components to enable manufacturers to offer budget ultrabooks, for instance using AMD processors instead of Intel’s own chips.

That would of course disqualify any such machines from Intel’s official ‘Ultrabook’ certification, but consumers are unlikely to mind. It seems the ultra slim, ultra light design of ultrabooks appeals to buyers, even if the premium price tag dosen’t. Intel has sunk $300 million into promoting the ultrabook format to fend off competition in the mobile sphere from Android tablets and oversized smartphones.
