Replacing the 4GB internal SSD of EEE 701 with a 16GB SD card – Asus Eee PC 701 Extreme modding

Some people are either too enthusiastic or some are just simply crazy. A user(gtisingh) from EEEforum loves his Asus EEE 701 to death and after owning from nearly 2 years now, he went ahead and added a 16GB SDHC card. He did not stop there. He installed some fancy blue LEDs under its bonnet too!

I’ve never really made a proper post on what I’ve done to my Asus EEE PC, I have always just referred to it.

E.g. Yes, I like the way you placed the SD card reader there, i stuck mine here.

Well hopefully this will be more detailed, and maybe I’ll come back to this in my old age and think ‘what a waste of time!’. I ordered 2 SDHC card readers of eBay for like 50p each. Brought 2 in case one broke.

So I’ve taken out my old 4GB Flash drive and I’ve replaced it with the 16GB SDHC card. I was planning to put my wireless mouse receiver back in there, but I don’t want to drill a hole to get access to the connect button. This leaves me with 1 port free. So, I have hooked up a <60mah led in the air extracting vent. I’ll have a nice modderes blue shining out in the dark. I have hooked up a switch in that useless port next to the Ethernet one.

I tried putting the Asus Eee 701 motherboard back down, but something underneath is preventing it. I’ll have to do some shuffling of USB devices so it rests nicely.

So here is what i did, at the top of the picture below is what the SDHC card reader looks like in its casing. The one underneath is what it looks like stripped of its casing and insulated.

There’s a tiny indent in the motherboard to allow the other cables to go through. I took advantage of that and slipped it through there.

Below is my Hub/TS. The LED gets in excess of 55oC due to it being directly under the CPU. It can handle it though. The current set up is x1 4GB flash drive, a TS, and a Bluetooth dongle. I plan to remove the 4GB stick, replace it with a 16GB SDHC card and add a nice little led to the free port to spruce things up.

The 16GB shows up, DIP switch controls the LED.
