What do one miss in Windows 7 Starter as compared to other Windows 7 Editions?

After the long awaited demise of Windows XP, Windows 7 is finally making appearance in plethora of netbooks. To keep the costs minimum, Microsoft is suggesting the netbook manufactures to opt for the Windows 7 Starter. But, what would one miss if you are about to get a netbook with Windows 7 Starter? Here is the list of things that you would miss:

  • Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the “Windows Basic” or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
  • Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
  • The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
  • Multi-monitor support.
  • DVD playback.
  • Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
  • Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
  • Domain support for business customers.
  • XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.

For a user, that would be buying a netbook for surfing and office editing, none of the aforementioned missing features would affect the usage. The best thing that Windows 7 Starter did not inherit from Windows XP Starter is the notorious 3-app limit. I have no problem with Windows 7 Starter. Period.
