Bill Gates firmly believes iPad cannot replace Tablet PCs

Bill Gates firmly believes iPad cannot replace Tablet PCs

Bill Gates in a speech today said that iPad is trying to penetrate into the Tablet PC market and are trying to become the "market creators". He further said that there is "nothing great" about the iPad and still believes that for a tablet to be accepted by the mainstream, it must incorporate a physical keyboard, voice input and pen. That said, he praised that the iPad can be decent eReader.

Why would you want to have pen if everything is incredibly finger-friendly? Also, we are sure that it has a built-in microphone and thus will feature voice command feature, just like the iPhone and iPod Touch. However, lack of physical keyboard may prevent it to enter mainstream.

Archos 9 tablet PC hands-on video

This Archos has a big 9-inch display and a touch screen display. This is first tablet by Archos that runs Windows OS (Windows 7 Starter to be specific). It has no multi-touch and is bulky at 1.2 pounds. It can either be used with stylus or your fingers. It has Intel Atom Z515 processor, 1GB RAM and 60GB HDD. The Archos 9 comes with a removable 4-cell battery which should give you up to 3 hours of runtime.

At $500, we think it is aptly priced as:

  • there are not many similar devices around
  • Archos is a good brand
  • it runs Windows 7 (although we expected something better than the Starter edition)

Here is the hands on video:

Herbi Writer – a UMPC App For People With Learning Disabilities

Herbi Writer – a UMPC App For People With Learning Disabilities

Herbi Writer is a Tablet PC/UMPC app for people with learning disabilities that lets them develop handwriting skills.

Herbi Writer shows sample letters to the student, and the student writes the letter on the computer screen. If the software considers the student’s letter to be a match for the sample, positive feedback appears on the screen. You can have reinforcing phrases spoken by the computer too. A simple game can be played to see how many letters of the alphabet are correct when writing all the letters of alphabet.

The developer of this application has been kind enough of making this fine application for free.
