Story of new Sony Vaio P

Story of new Sony Vaio P

Last year at CES 2009, Sony Vaio P got a lot of hype of being so thin, light and stylish. Though it did not break any records in terms of sales, it showed the world that Sony still has an edge over other companies when it comes to design and uniqueness. Here is an interesting read that I discovered at Sony.net

Run amazing games on Sony Vaio P – using modified GMA Driver

kyo86sg has modified the driver for the Intel GMA 500 chipset. For those who do not know, the chipset supports both OpenGL as-well-as D3D. By using this modified driver on the Sony Vaio P, you will be able to run the games like Running Red Alert 1, Worms World Party and GTA 2 at native resolution (1600×768 pixels) . You are also suggested to overclock the CPU for extra performance boost:

  • Atom Z520(1.33) to (1.60)GHz
  • Atom Z530(1.60) to (1.80)GHz
  • Atom Z540(1.86) to (2.20)GHz

Overclocking shall be done using setFSB and set the clock gen to ICS9UMS9610BL

Sony Vaio P with Crocodile skin is not as powerful as a Croc

Sony Vaio P with Crocodile skin is not as powerful as a Croc

We know, we know that there multitudinous cases out there for the netbooks and notebooks resembling the skin like that of a crocodile, peacock, rabbit and other nasty animals, but seldom do we find a netbook wearing those animal suits. Among those rare netbooks is the Sony Vaio P, which is now available with a Crocodile skin design.

Unfortunately, its processor is not as powerful as a Croc. Infact, there is no change compared to the recently updated Sony Vaio P. It still features Intel Atom Z560 CPU, 256GB SSD, 2GB RAM and so on. Also, this model is Japan only

New Sony Vaio P!

New Sony Vaio P!

Sony Vaio P, which was unveiled last year at CES, to be honest, was not much liked by the tech enthusiasts and Journalists. The core reason was Windows Vista and the underpowered Atom Z520 1.3GHz processor. Sony has addressed that problem in the new Sony Vaio P by equipping it with a perked-up processor, the Atom Z560 chip.

The new Vaio P brings some new features to the table too – an optical touchpad that is built into the bezel and accelerometer.  Also, gone are the glossy colors and in are five new colors (black, white, pink, green and orange) that appear to have matte surface.

Specifications: 8-inch display, 1600×768 pixel resolution, 2GB RAM, 64GB SSD, GMA 500, Atom Z560 processor, GPS, built-in 3G, GPS, compass, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, 0.6kg and runs Windows 7 Home Premium.

The new Vaio P starts at $800 in the US. Coming to the store near you in June.

Cedar Trail to be fanless

Cedar Trail to be fanless

Chances are that the next-gen Intel Atom CPU, codenamed Cedar Trail will be fanless. The TDP of this upcoming CPU is estimated to be around 5W, which makes sense to make the whole netbook fanless. No fan = more power left for CPU and other components under the bonnet.

Note that this is not the first time we are going to be endowed with fanless mobile CPUs. Many of the Atom-based Sony Vaio netbooks do not have fan inside. This include Sony Vaio P and Sony Vaio X, both of which use the extremely power-sipping Atom Z-series CPU.

Vaio P Clone

Vaio P Clone

We have now literally lost the count of Vaio P clones. Here is yet-another netbook that tries to look like the Sony Vaio P. This netbook, called the BYD ODM Netbook sports metal chassis, 10-inch display, comfy keyboard (non-chiclet) and a small optical touchpad. The only feature missing, obviously is the nub (trackpoint). The BYD netbook is powered by an 1GHz Intel Atom Z530 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 2 USB 2.0 ports and a SIM card slot.

It inherits the missing features of Vaio P too – there is not Ethernet and video output ports. Priced at $300, we have little right to complain though

Sungworld L3 – Another Sony Vaio P lookalike, but with a Touchpad

Woa, yet another netbook clone and guess what, again imitating the looks of the Sony Vaio P. This netbook clone, called the Sungworld L3 sports an Intel Atom N270, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD and 3200mAh battery. Also features CMMB TV Module and Touchpad, both of which are not there in the original one. It is priced at $308, which clearly makes it much more affordable than the original Vaio P.
