Qualcomm betting a lot on Smartbooks – says future is very bright for Smartbook

Qualcomm is giving its best endeavor to increase its sales and thinks that computers in the future will be just like Mobile Phones. By computers, they mean Smartbooks which are basically netbooks running Android, Google Chrome OS or Linux.

Most of the upcoming Smartbooks will be using ARM processors, precisely Qualcomm ARM-based CPUs.

Consumers want computers that will run all day on one battery charge, don’t need to be switched off and are always receiving data, said Jacobs, whose company is the world’s biggest maker of mobile-phone chips.

According to Qualcomm, people do not want to carry a bulky laptop and its charger all day with them. They want a device that can run all day and remain connected too. More than 12 companies have decided to use the Snapdragon’s chip, which runs at 1GHz clock speed. The future is surely very exciting and we are waiting for the Snapdragon-based netbooks AKA Smartbooks to hit the market

Hummingbird – ‘Another’ 1GHz Smartphone processor for the Need For Speed!

Most of our readers must be well acquainted with the 1GHz Qualcomm processor known as Snapdragon that set the mobile world on fire as it was the fastest smartphone processor till date. Samsung is now joining the ARM Race by unveiling their first 1GHz processor meant for mobile devices – Hummingbird processor.

Some features of the upcoming Hummingbird processor:

• Modifiable L2 memory cache
• Delivers 2000 DMIPS at 1 GHz
• Features an ARM NEON multimedia extension
• Less Power consumption
• Data & instruction cache of 32KB
• High operating clock performance

It may be that Samsung will be supplying this 1GHz processor for the iPhone 4G (which will be released in 2010) although we would love to see this implemented in MIDs

Wistron Firstbook Netbook runs linux

SONY VAIO P look-alikes are on fire now. The Wistron Firstbook is a Linux based netbook, which looks a lot like the VAIO P. It is a powerful machine with built-in 3G and 11.1-inch widescreen with Bluetooth and WiFi. It is running on the Snapdragon platform, which is also being used by Toshiba’s TG01, a windows mobile device. The Snapgradon consumes much less power as compared to the Atom processor, but it is also less capable than the Atom.

Nokia to enter Netbook market?

Nokia is in talks with the various Taiwan notebook manufactures for its possible entry to the netbook market. Compal Electronics and Foxconn are top-two potential partners, which are likely to get the order from Nokia for its netbook production. According to Digitimes, Nokia is still yet to choose between the Intel Atom platform and Qualcomm Snapdragon platform for its first netbook.
We would certainly like the Nokia to go for the Intel Atom platform as the it will let them to come out with Windows-based netbooks. Qualcomm Snapdragran is being used on the Toshiba TG01 smartphone and we would like to be a smartphone-only processor. Intel Atom or the VIA Nano are much more suitable for making powerful netbooks. Nokia MIDs (N810 and N800) could never make a big splash in either MID market or netbook market. The core reason was the use of proprietary linux distro and slow processor.
