LG launches 13-inch CULV notebook
LG has finally jumped into the arena of CULV notebooks. Its first thin-and-light CULV notebook is based on Intel’s SU7300 processor and is just 25mm thick. It weighs 1.89kg, but then it is not a netbook and much bigger frame than a conventional nebtook. It has 4GB of DDR2 RAM, Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, 500GB hard drive and runs Windows 7 home premium.
It has a huge 8-cell battery, which LG claims will give you 10 hours of battery run time. Nothing is known about its pricing.
ARM to overtake Intel in Netbooks and Smartbooks? – We DISAGREE!
Currently, there is no doubt that Intel is the uncrowned king in the netbook market, but according to the market analysts, ARM will surpass Intel by the year 2012. According to this analyst, Intel-powered netbooks have started to become very expensive and cost more than $200 and offer just 3.5 hours of battery life. On the other hand, ARM-powered netbooks will cost less than $200 and will also last much longer: 8 hours.
Our take on this:
The comparison is baseless. People want Windows OS on their netbooks. They want to use their desktop apps on their netbooks for which they require Windows OS. Unfortunately, since Microsoft has already confirmed that it has no plans on bringing their desktop OS to the ARM-architecture, you are left with nothing but Linux or Google’s Chrome OS.
We believe that smartbooks can never surpass netbooks in terms of sales even if they are offered for less than $100. Clearly, they offer little advantage over the current slew of smartphones which do much more than emailing and web-browsing alone. Also, in their comparison, they said netbooks have 3.5 hours of battery life. Wrong as most of the netbooks these days come with 6-cell batteries which offer more than 5-6 hours of run-time with active Wifi usage. Looks like these analysts have been taking in account the netbooks that were released last year.
ASUS EEE 1008HA – Battery Life
The ASUS EEE 1008HA, unlike all other EEE PCs comes with a built-in battery as opposed to external battery. By the slim looks of it, one may think that it would not be able to deliver sufficient amount of battery life to make it last long enough, but we were wrong.
I started off the day with battery fully charged. Immediately after the boot up, I switched to Power Saving mode as I wanted to know the maximum runtime it can deliver. It was showing me 5 hours and 45 minutes. Note that, this was with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disabled and I was not connected to the Internet in any manner. I then did some of my office work at a random coffee shop. After working for an hour or so and brightness set to just two notches above the minimum brightness levels, it was still showing me 5 hours and 15 minutes of runtime.
Then, I got into my car and used my WiMax (3.5G) modem with the help of an extension cable. Why an extension cable? See this post to know more about it.

GNB 7-inch Netbook runs Google Android
GNB is showing off a 7-inch screen netbook running Google Android OS. It comes with a small keyboard that is hard to type-on. That is due to the small overall size of the GNB netbook. Even the touchpad is small and has left and right click buttons on the either side of the netbook. Battery life is good for only about 2.5 hours.
Features:-
- 533MHz Freescale ARM processor
- Android OS
- 800 x 480 pixel 7-inch touchscreen
- Non-Glossy display
- 256MB RAM
- 8GB SSD
- 3 USB ports
- 680 grams
No word on pricing yet. This is just a little bigger than the Fujitsu U2010 UMPC, which comes with a tiny 5.6-inch touchscreen and runs Windows Vista
ASUS EEE 1008HA reviewed
PCworld have done a review of the EEE 1008HA seashell netbook. It for those who always wanted to have something ultra-slim like Macbook Air, but could not buy it due to its enormous price tag.
The ASUS EEE 1008HA comes with normal netbook-ish specs and a 3-cell battery with which the ASUS claims to have nearly 5 hours of run time, which looks highly doubtful to me. The keyboard has undergone massive change and it looks very comfortable to type on. The right shift is just like the one found on Acer Aspire Ones: Full Size.
