HCL, a company popular for claiming outsourced products as their own products, has launched a new netbook – ME 06 in India. It is one of the few 3G enabled netbooks available in India. Here are its specs:

Intel Atom N270 processor
10.1-inch screen, 1024x600 resolution
160GB HDD
1GB RAM
Intel 945 chipset
1.6kg
6-cell battery
3 USB ports, LAN, VGA

It comes bundled with numerous utilities like Lock Me, Encrypt me, Secure Me and Split Me. Being priced at $440 (Rs 21640), it certainly not the cheapest out there, but it is a brand that many Indians believe in.

However, we have heard that HCL support is horrid in India. Stay away from them

We have mentioned about the ASUS Smartbook on many occasions (this, this and this). However, nobody knew the price at which it will retail for.Well, it has been confirmed by the ASUS boss, Jerry Shen that it will retail at $184. Interestingly, now he has firm believe in the success of the Smartbooks. This is contrary to what he said earlier this year “I still don't see a clear market for smartbooks”We won't blame him as then, Android was not considered so powerful and did not have such extensive application support. So it made sense to postpone their Smartbook's launch. Now, as the Android platform is taking a firm grip in the market, it appears that it is the right time for the Smartbooks to finally enter the market of netbooks and notebooks.

Couple of months back, HP unveiled a couple of designer netbooks based on the HP Mini 110: "Studio Tord Boontje" edition and "Vivienne Tam designer" edition. We have come to know that the "Studio Tord Boontje" edition is now available with Windows 7 Starter edition.It retails for $399.Commentary: Frankly speaking, if you ask us, we won't recommend you to buy this netbook as it runs Atom N270 which is, by no means, the most advanced and power-sipping processor. Secondly, the machine is over-priced for what it offers. 160GB HDD, 1GB RAM coupled with N270 makes the overall deal look awful[HP store]

ASUS is now focusing on clearing the stock of its 7-inch and 8.9-inch netbooks by reducing their price. At many places, the EEE 701 (7-inch) is being sold at $150 and 8.9-inch EEE (EEE 901 and EEE 900) at $200.It is not surprising to see that all the manufactures have shifted their whole focus to the 10-inch+ netbooks. The reason is simple: bigger displays means bigger chassis, which lets them to fit in a bigger keyboard.

Acer Aspire One D250 launched in Asia

Acer Aspire D250 is now on sale in Asia with a suggested price of 23,995 Pesos ($507) in Philippines. This new Aspire One is not much different from the Aspire One D150, which was launched a couple of months ago. Lenovo's senior exec has revealed that the company is looking forward to release a netbook under the Thinkpad brandname. Due to the recent introduction of netbooks sporting high price tags, IBM thinks that the lines between netbooks and notebooks are blurring at a very fast rate.However, Lenovo has clearly indicated that the Thinkpad netbook will not have specs of a conventional netbook. According to them, if you want 'full functionality', you will have to go for Core or Celeron mobile processor. The Thinkpad netbook will be designed to cater to the needs of those who yearn for something that is more powerful than the conventional netbook but has the same size and feel.The Thinkpad brand is a brand that is widely popular among businessmen and if Lenovo releases something under that brand, it will be of premium quality for sure.

OQO cancels all preorders for MODEL 2+

First we saw the disappearance of the OQO models from the expansys store and now we get the news that OQO has canceled all the preorders for the model 2+. This further makes us think one think: Is OQO on the brink of getting bankrupt?Clearly, UMPCs are now dying due to their huge price tags and poor demand. Companies need to realize that in such tough times, it would hard for the consumer to shell out $1000+ on a UMPC. ASUS has pretty much understood this fact that they released their tablet/UMPC at a fair price tag of $549.I am personally not at all surprised due to the fact they were NOT able to offer satisfactory service to the customers in US or anywhere around the world.
