Intel thinks – ION not required for netbooks

Intel's director of netbook marketing, Anil Nanduri in an interview said that Nvidia's ION is very much absurd for the netbooks. "In terms of usages, netbooks are not meant for gaming. You can run Internet games fine today with the existing solutions. We believe (ION) adds unnecessary additional cost and the other trade-offs make it less desirable," said the director Nanduri. Without a doubt ION can be used for nettops.Well, somebody shall tell him that ION is not only for gaming, but also for viewing HD videos. Without ION, it would be impossible to view 1080p on a netbook. That said, it should be noted that viewing 1080p videos only make sense when you have HDMI port on your ION netbook. Otherwise, there is no point in watching full HD videos on a low-resolution screen

The Artopz Minitopz nettop has both dual-core Intel Atom 330 CPU and NVidia ION graphics. It has the same general specs which we usually come across, but there is something in it that no other nettop has - da looks.Artopz Minitopz is priced at $2250. But, then this nettop is all about style. Although for that price, we would instead decorate our room with a $15 USB lamp!

Some more follow-up news about the 11.6” Samsung N510 mini-notebook: The netbook choice has acquainted us that there will be 2 more models of the Samsung N510. Apart from N510, there will also be N508 and N510 models whose specs are not yet known. However, one of them is suspected to have an 10-inch display instead of 11.6-inch.According to Netbook News Italia, there will be another model that will use ION LE that we mentioned few days back which apparently has NO SUPPORT FOR DIRECTX 10.

ASUS to launch ion-based netbooks and nettops

ASUS is testing several netbooks and nettops based on the new Ion-technology. ASUS is expecting to launch Ion-based Eee Box B1006 in the 3rd quater of 2009, but there is no news on release date about the Ion-based netbooks.Although the Ion-netbooks will be much more powerful than the current netbooks, but I doubt if they would be able to give 6 hour-plus battery life that almost all modern netbooks posses.

Acer has launched its first ION powered nettop, which offers advanced graphics capabilities when compared to the other nettops already in the market. If you've been living under the shelves and have not heard about the ION platform, then you have missed something really big. Remember that a couple of months back, we brought you news that the first ION based hardware will be a nettop. General manager of Nvidia says“You will be stunned and amazed watching HD videos, editing photos, surfing the web and playing the latest online games.”

Nvidia has already made a lot of friends, who are interested in their ION platform. Now, another digitimes rumor says that they are developing ION-2 for VIA Technologies' NANO CPU. According to the report, Nvidia was already in talks with the VIA to develop a low cost PC.

This is a great news as this will make the competition even more interesting than we originally thought. Earlier, we heard news of only Atom processors utilizing the ION platform. Now, that VIA's NANO are also in the game, it can assure us only one thing: release of more powerful netbooks (and nettops) is imminent
