Classmate PCs doomed already?

Governments and OEM partners in the emerging markets, who previously had shown great interest in the classmate PCs have asked the manufactures to CANCEL or SUSPEND the shipments. However, the manufactures of Classmate PCs (Quanta Computer and Elitegroup Computer Systems) are unperturbed as the order volumes were not huge by any means.

Intel is yet to comment on the sudden cancellation of orders.

Intel to ship nearly 2 million Classmate PCs in year 2009!

Intel Classmate PC, which sold nearly 700,000 in the year 2008 is forcasted to be break 2 million mark this year. In China, Intel has partnered with the local network provider Haier to sell Classmate PCs there. It is also taking procurement orders from parts of Europe and Southeast Asia.

The netbook vendors have become a little worried due to this as they think that this move by Intel can impact their sales. In defending itself, Intel said that it no plans to compete in netbook market. Intel added that they will continue to work with OEM partners to sell Classmate PCs for the youth education
