Dual displays on new Kohjinsha Netbook Prototype
Over at CEATEC 2009 in Japan, Kohjinsha has on display a prototype netbok running Windows 7 Home Premium with dual 10.1-inch displays. It uses AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 which run at the clock speed of 1.6GHz; has 4GB RAM (max), 160GB HDD, built-in TV Tuner and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. It also features a fingerprint scanner.
Nothing is known about its release date. Chances are that it won’t ever be released
Mimo launches 7-inch display – Mimo 710-S
Just when you thought that netbook manufactures have completely phased out the 7-inch netbooks, a random manufacture has come up with an 7-inch sliding frame-type screen. It has basic WVGA (800×480) resolution and costs $150. For this price, you can easily get yourself an 20-inch LCD monitor!
Expect lots of Smartbooks in coming months
Many manufacturers, including Acer, Foxconn, Compal, Pegatron and Inventec will start shipping ARM-based smartbooks. The new ARM-based smartbooks will be smaller in size, and a bit cheaper, contrary to Atom powered netbook. But obviously they won’t be as good, and also won’t be able to run a proper version of Windows. You will stuck with Linux or Win CE, and may see Android in few of them, too.
Asustek, the second biggest netbook maker, is looking to launch its smartbooks later in November or December. Reason? They believe that therer is not enough demand for such devices and would rather wait for the feedbacks of this new product class.
That said, the main advantage of these netbooks will be that it will be very compact. The first models are expected to have 8.9-inch displays and will cost around $200.
