Lenovo won’t be launching any Linux netbooks – verifies interest in Google Chrome OS

After lots of babbling and rumoring, Lenovo now came forward and authenticated about planning and considering netbooks with Google Chrome OS. However, it is going to a some time for the Lenovo to churn out netbooks totting Chrome OS as they do not even have Chrome’s Alpha code to test on their netbooks.

Lenovo also pointed out that Windows 7 has further widened the gap between Linux and Windows. According to Lenovo, people were returning their Linux netbooks as they were not able to run iTunes on it. As weird as it sounds, we actually think that Linux, especially Ubuntu 9.10 has come with plethora of improvements and new user-friendly features. Just because it cannot run iTunes does not means that it is an inferior OS.

Example: it takes less steps to install an app in Ubuntu than Windows. Just go to Ubuntu Software Center; find the app and click install. No more Terminal mumbo-jumbo

Updated EEE Linux OS for EEE PCs (700, 701, 900, 901, 1000H etc)

Updated EEE Linux OS for EEE PCs (700, 701, 900, 901, 1000H etc)

ASUS never rolled much needed updates for the EEE PCs that ran their Xandros Linux OS. No upgrades were given to the (poor) users of the EEE 700-series which were forced to use old version of Firefox (v2). Folks at XEPC.org have unveiled version 1.7 of the EEE PC OS that is compatible with EEE 700, 701, 701SD, 900, 900A, 900SD, 901, 904HD, 1000 and S101.

The main features and improvements that you will find in this update are:

  • Support for more languages
  • More themes
  • Inclusion of Firefox 3 and OpenOffice 2.4<==
  • It uses kernal 2.6.26 that supports hyperthreading. Ofcourse, you need a netbook that has an Atom processor in it to use hyperthreading. This also means that this feature won’t work on the netbooks that use Celeron processor that includes 700-series

Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix to be available soon!

Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix to be available soon!

Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, has announced the availability of Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix. The newer version of ubuntu is going to be made available this coming Thursday. The newer version sports faster boot times. It also comes with an interface which lets them launch their favorite application easily and quickly. Other improvements include better power management and easier switching between networks.

Although, I really enjoyed EEEbuntu, which is actually an Ubuntu 8.10 with EEE drivers, but its long bootup time was the main turn off. That is the reason, I kept going back to Windows XP. I’m really looking forward to download the Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix version. I hope the improvements are enough to make me use the Ubuntu full time.
