Intel Atom CE4100 unveiled – this thing is a beast!

At IDF 2009, Intel announced a new Atom processor, Atom CE4100 media chip. This chip is designed to run on set-top boxes and Blue-ray players. It is the most powerful Atom chip ever made by Intel.

When we say that it is powerful, we really mean it. It has the ability to take two 1080p video streams simultaneously, 3D rendering and much more.

It even supports capturing uncompressed 1080p video including support for almost all the high-end audio codecs. However, Intel has no plans to bring to netbooks or nettops. Gratifying, but looks like, we have no choice, but to settle with ION chipsets from Nvidia

Intel Atom processors to get even smaller, more power-frugal in future

Though not detailed, but a brief idea of the master plan for the Intel’s roadmap for it’s Intel Atom processor was unmasked at a presentation at IDF 2009. As it can be clearly seen, the presentation shows the processor getting smaller and smaller and focus being on reducing the power consumption as much as possible.

Could this be the sign of running x86-based hardware in the palm of hands in the coming few years?

Moblin 2.1 officially announced at IDF 2009

Remember the Moblin OS that we mentioned few months back? Emerged from its beta status and now moving up to V2, its the Intel’s Moblin OS which was displayed at IDF 2009. Moblin is Intel’s own Linux based OS for portable devices, which runs on Intel processors and is adapted for netbooks and other smaller devices like MIDs and UMPCs. Its very apt for a small phone right up to a full 10-inch sized display of a netbook.

BMW and Mercedes to equip their cars with Intel Atom-based infotainment systems

Intel at IDF 2009 announced that the car manufactures, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have decided to use Intel Atom powered infotainment system in their cars and such cars will be available in the year 2012. BMW will use it in its 7-series and Mercedes-Benz will use it in S-class and C-class.

Both the companies will be using Atom Z-series processor in these $60,000+ vehicles! They should have settled for something like dual-core Atom atleast (read about the recently announced D510 and D410 Atom CPUs). I cannot wait to see the “Intel Inside” sticker on the BMW’s bumper!
