Haleron Swordfish – powered by two Intel Atom N270 processors – one of its kind?

Here is a netbook that is very unique: Haleron Swordfish, which is powered by (unusually) two Intel Atom N270 processors, each running at 1.6GHz clock speed. Rest of its specs are netbook-ish:

  • 160GB HDD
  • 2GB RAM
  • 10.2-inch display
  • 1024×600 resolution
  • 1.3MP webcam
  • 4-in-one card reader

It has built-in 3G WCDMA WWAN module to make you remain connected all around the day. It weighs 1.35kg and measures 252x182x30mm

Commentary: Two N270 processors! Talk about some serious dual core action. However, integrating two weak processors do not make one powerful processor. It is still a netbook processor and still won’t stand anywhere close to core 2 duo’s horsepower

CULV or Intel Atom processor: A Comparison

CULV or Intel Atom processor: A Comparison

From the past couple months, we have seen an incredible rise in the usage of the CULV processors in the notebooks, especially the ultra-slim ones from MSI.(MSI X400, MSI X610, HP DM3, Wind U120 and so on)

CULV processors are more powerful than the Intel Atom processors even at lower clock frequencies. However, there is one thing that has stopped most of the manufactures NOT to use it in their netbooks: PRICE.

frustrated

I feel acutely that once Intel and AMD, reduce the prices of the CULV processors a bit, most of the netbook manufactures will opt for equipping their netbooks with these more powerful CULV processors instead of Intel Atom CPUs.

Stupid statement by RIM: Smartphones will dominate netbooks

Research In Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that since the Smartphones are more pocketable than the netbooks, they will always rule over the netbooks. I am little shocked by this bizarre statement. Smartphones and netbooks are two very different products. Netbooks are much (much) more powerful devices that run on x86 platform that allow the users to run desktop class applications on their small computers.

“Form factor is a personal preference but it’s got to be something that lasts the better part of the day and you can hold up to your ear and clip onto your belt,” he said in response to our question about his vision for future products. “Those are a very tight systems constraints for a netbook.”

Till date, no smartphone runs Windows XP or equivalent OS. For doing serious work, you always have to use the desktop OS. Although, most of the smartphones these days come with some sort of office functionality, but it is just enough to read data on-the-go. You just cannot think of doing heavy word processing on it as it just does not have the adequate amount of horsepower.

Conclusion: RIM is comparing Apples to Oranges. They are two very different creatures

Android Netbook by Skytone

Android Netbook by Skytone

Yesterday, we posted about the ibuddie netbook which would be powered by Android OS. Now, Skytone is also going to release its Android powered netbook.

It will come with following specifications:

  • 533MHz ARM processor
  • 7-inch touchscreen
  • 800 x 480 resolution
  • 128MB of RAM
  • 1GB of storage
  • SD card slot
  • 3G (optional)

The netbook may seem pretty underpowered when compared to the netbooks powered by Atom processor, but we must not forget that we are talking about a netbook that runs mobile OS. Android OS is certainly not ‘that’ tasking on the CPU and hence, does not a lot of horsepower to run.

It is nice to the option to get one with 3G built-in though.
