The Dolphin HD Android browser has been updated to reinstate the double-tap exit feature, meaning you’ve got an ultra-quick way to leave a page and get straight back to the homescreen. It might not seem much on paper, but it feels good when browsing. Back-ups can now be saved to SD cards too, another useful [...]

ASUS Eee PC 1005P to have Express Gate Quick Boot OS

ASUS Eee PC 1005P to have Express Gate Quick Boot OS

ASUS Eee PC 1005P is going to be the ASUS’s first netbook that will be equipped with Pine Trail processor. That is, however, not the most exiting feature, it is its BIOS update that has cropped up on ASUS’s support page, which says there is an update for the Express Gate OS.

So, what is the Express Gate OS? Well, it is a stripped down Linux distribution that is meant to boot as quick as possible that lets to user to do basic stuff like getting connected to Internet and check his email. This is a clever move by ASUS as it will give it an edge over the current netbook makers. Many companies including Acer does not bundles any quick booting OS with their netbook. One cannot call Android a quick booting OS for a netbook as that does not even runs a desktop version of Firefox.

It shall be noted that Lenovo is an exception as it does bundles a quick booting OS with their netbooks

Microsoft launches Office 2010 online – Now, that is Cloud Computing!

Microsoft has today officially launched web-based versions of its Office 2010, which Microsoft is calling Office Web Applications. These web-based applications will be a part of Windows Live Skydrive which is an online file storage service (25GB) provided by the Microsoft itself.

This is clearly Microsoft’s answer to the Google Apps, which is Google’s online office suit. Microsoft has been under a lot of pressure since Google released Chrome OS which further took away market share of IE.

It runs fine on all the modern web-browsers including IE, Firefox and Safari. Chrome is currently not supported, but a version that would support it is in the works. Support for Opera is nowhere mentioned.

Oh, we forgot to mention the best part about it: it is FREE!

Updated EEE Linux OS for EEE PCs (700, 701, 900, 901, 1000H etc)

Updated EEE Linux OS for EEE PCs (700, 701, 900, 901, 1000H etc)

ASUS never rolled much needed updates for the EEE PCs that ran their Xandros Linux OS. No upgrades were given to the (poor) users of the EEE 700-series which were forced to use old version of Firefox (v2). Folks at XEPC.org have unveiled version 1.7 of the EEE PC OS that is compatible with EEE 700, 701, 701SD, 900, 900A, 900SD, 901, 904HD, 1000 and S101.

The main features and improvements that you will find in this update are:

  • Support for more languages
  • More themes
  • Inclusion of Firefox 3 and OpenOffice 2.4<==
  • It uses kernal 2.6.26 that supports hyperthreading. Ofcourse, you need a netbook that has an Atom processor in it to use hyperthreading. This also means that this feature won’t work on the netbooks that use Celeron processor that includes 700-series

Tip for Firefox 3.5+ users: Hide the Tab bar when only one tab is opened

Tip for Firefox 3.5+ users: Hide the Tab bar when only one tab is opened

Many of us upgraded to the Firefox 3.5 immediately when it was released. Although the new version bought a lot of speed and security improvements, it also made the tab bar ‘permanently’ visible even though only tab was in use. This might not have affected the netbook users with high screen resolutions (like VAIO P), but it certainly bugged me a lot on my EEE 1000H and even more on my EEE 701, which comes with just 800 x 480 pixel screen.

Slashtop coming to SONY and Acer netbooks – Just another Instant-on OS

Slashtop is yet another custom Linux distro that promises to load in 10-15 seconds. However, unlike Ubuntu, which is a full-featured Linux distro, the Slashtop does not come with a lot of apps on board. It just comes with the basic programs like firefox and pidgin.

Acer and Sony are not the first ones to adopt the Slashtop OS. Before them, Lenovo has also licensed their software for their desktop PCs. That said, Acer and Sony are not bringing the Slashtop OS to their respective netbooks. Acer is going to put it in their nettops and Sony will be putting it in their VAIO NW notebook line.

When it comes to speed in Linux distros, I personally find the Ubuntu 9.04 NBR quick enough. I do not mind waiting for extra 10 seconds if those extra 10 seconds can give me a full-featured OS instead of a stripped one.

IE 8 more secure than Firefox and Chrome – well, that is what Microsoft thinks!

IE 8 more secure than Firefox and Chrome – well, that is what Microsoft thinks!

According to Microsoft, IE 8 is safer; provides more privacy and is more reliable than the Firefox and Chrome.

I am speechless! I do not use IE at all as I find it as something that gives invitation to hackers and viruses. Firefox and Chrome are the way to go on netbooks as-well-as notebooks.
