It looks like ASUS is ready to anything, and we mean anything to sell its EEE PC. Recently, ASUS has shaken hands with a modeling agency, Moko to promote its EEE PCs in Asia. Here are some of the exciting pictures that will make you excited….um, about EEE PCs, I suppose (!)

HTC Shift charger is same as EEE PC charger!

HTC Shift charger is same as EEE PC charger!

I am sure many of you must be having problems in finding chargers for the HTC Shift. Let’s face it, the HTC Shift is not as popular as other netbooks or UMPCs and HTC has not been able to sell a lot of these units.

Now, it has been found that the charger is same as the EEE PC charger, to be specific, EEE 901’s charger and 1000x’s charger. Even the make is same!

This also means that if you wish to buy a car charger for your HTC Shift, all you have to do is buy one made for the EEE PCs!

New External DVD-RW From ASUS for Netbooks

New External DVD-RW From ASUS for Netbooks

Asus has rolled out an external DVD-RW, SDRW-08D1S which is made to match your Eee PC netbook. It looks pretty darn fine from every side and angle.

Just like any other DVD RW in the market, it supports all disk formats except Blueray. It can burn DVDs up to 8x speed and 24x speed for CD writing. The DVD RW does not come with any external power cable. All you have to do is to use a USB cable to connect it to your netbook to start burning CDs/DVDs.

No information on when it will be launched or about its price tag.

ASUS EEE 1008HA – Display and Hinge

ASUS EEE 1008HA is the first EEE PC with a glossy display. Until now, all the EEE PCs have come with matte display. I have always loved matte screens as it allows me work inside my office as-well-as on the road too. Glossy displays, although look very pretty are a nightmare to work with in the direct sunlight or bulb.

If you have ever seen HP Mini 1000 or any of the mininotes from HP in person, then you will name ASUS as the copycat as it copied the recessed hinge design of the HP Minis netbooks and implemented it in the EEE 1008HA. But who cares? We are happy with the design as it has considerably helped in reducing the height of the design.

Thoughts:

If you have been happy with your notebook with glossy display and you are fine with them even while working outdoors, you should then have no problem with the EEE 1008HA. Personally, I would still prefer matte displays.

How To Control CPU Speed of your Atom-powered ASUS EEE PC in Ubuntu Linux

How To Control CPU Speed of your Atom-powered ASUS EEE PC in Ubuntu Linux

Since the release of Ubuntu 9.04 Linux for netbooks, I have finally started using Linux more than I used to. However, there was one thing that I found that was missing from the Ubuntu that ASUS offered for Windows XP: Super Hybrid Engine (SHE). This allowed you to downscale the speed of the processor which played an active part in improving the battery life. Unfortunately, ASUS never made SHE available for the Linux OS. Luckily, Grigori of geekmind.org has made a utility known as eee-control that lets you downscale as-well-as upscale the CPU speed as per your requirement.

eee-control is an easy-to-use utility for controlling Eee PC hardware under Linux. It can toggle hardware (WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) on and off, lets you configure all hardware hotkeys, enables aggressive powersaving, and more.

Now, when I am on AC-power, I use my EEE 1000H in performance mode and when I am mobile, I use it under powersave mode to prolong the battery life. Earlier, I used to get 3.5-4 hours in Linux and now, I am able to get 5 hours in Ubuntu Linux, which is pretty respectable for a netbook.

The eee-control automatically starts when you log-in and resides in the taskbar so that you always have access to it when needed.

Updated EEE Linux OS for EEE PCs (700, 701, 900, 901, 1000H etc)

Updated EEE Linux OS for EEE PCs (700, 701, 900, 901, 1000H etc)

ASUS never rolled much needed updates for the EEE PCs that ran their Xandros Linux OS. No upgrades were given to the (poor) users of the EEE 700-series which were forced to use old version of Firefox (v2). Folks at XEPC.org have unveiled version 1.7 of the EEE PC OS that is compatible with EEE 700, 701, 701SD, 900, 900A, 900SD, 901, 904HD, 1000 and S101.

The main features and improvements that you will find in this update are:

  • Support for more languages
  • More themes
  • Inclusion of Firefox 3 and OpenOffice 2.4<==
  • It uses kernal 2.6.26 that supports hyperthreading. Ofcourse, you need a netbook that has an Atom processor in it to use hyperthreading. This also means that this feature won’t work on the netbooks that use Celeron processor that includes 700-series
