Android x86 review – Runs great on the EEE PC!

Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on ASUS EEE 701
I always find it very exiting to see an obsolete netbook running the latest operating systems. After trying Vista and even Windows 7 on the EEE 701, I could not stop myself from trying Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix on it. So how does it performs on it. Read on!
Sharp PC-Z1 MID/Smartbook – Not that impressive after all – Quick Look
At the IFA, Sharp unveiled a small Smartbook that is much smaller than the regular netbooks that we usually see in the market. The Sharp PC-Z1 is very small, even more compact than the now obsolete, EEE 701. Not only its dimensions are smaller than the EEE 701, but it’s much lighter too (just 400gm).
Hardware-wise, the Sharp PC-Z1 does not has good keyboard. Well, you cannot have a compact device with touch-type-able keyboard. Can you? Moving ahead, the screen is great. It packs a lot of pixels (1024×600) into its 5-inch display, which is at par with the Fujitsu U810/U1010 that was released a couple of years back. However, unlike Fujitsu, this does not run Vista or Windows XP. In fact, it cannot even run one even if you wish to as it is not an x86 device.
Ubuntu is there to save us, but given the unpleasant fact that it took 10 seconds just to launch Firefox, it is disheartening for many of us. Openoffice writer took 40 seconds to load! So, although you will be able to enjoy great battery life (Sharp claims 10 hours), you will have to adapt yourself to slow performance.
It will be on sale in Japan later this month for the price of 350 Euros.
Commentary: From the looks of it, I’m sure, it is gratifying, but once you start using the device, it is then you realize the mistake you did when buying such a slow piece of hardware. I confess, I’ll call this device a pass

Why is Linux unable to take off? – How can Windows 7 affect Linux?
This is a topic that has been discussed trillion times on the Internet. Now, with Windows 7′s release right round the corner, it is important to know where the Linux OS goes from here.
ASUS was the first manufacture that revolutionized the world of netbooks. Their first netbook, known as EEE 701 ran Xandros OS, which is a Linux-based OS. Intel is now after thin and light notebooks – Netbooks are basic ‘companion’ devices? Boo!
Intel is now bending towards thin and light notebooks, and is seriously considering to fix the cost under $350 price for netbooks, which it describes as “companion” devices that offer a basic media experience and are intended for occasional use.
The thin and light notebook are the ones to be focused, and are planned to be priced between the range of $450 to $1100. These thin notebook will come with screen sizes over 10 inches. Currently, the cheapest CULV models will cost anywhere from $550 and $700. Intel considers these notebooks as primary PCs and very versatile, and avail you a rich multitasking and Internet experience.
I am personally not that drawn towards these ‘thin and light’ notebooks and I would better carry my laptop instead of carrying of anything that is above 10-inches. Also, we are sick of Intel considering the Intel Atom platform ‘weak’. Netbooks can do much more than Intel think. Perhaps, folks at Intel have not used any model other than the EEE 701 and that is why they think that they come with cramped keyboard and have pathetic battery life. On the other hand, most of the modern netbooks come with good spacious keyboard and offer incredible battery life.

- Intel Celeron-M 900MHz processor
- 512MB RAM

Do note that you can always upgrade to XP if you wish to. Kamal did on his EEE 701 and has been happy since then.
Verizon Wireless Netbook reviewed – HP Mini 1151NR
Folks at infosync have done a review of the recently released, HP Mini 1151NR. This is the same netbook, which was last week released by Verizon Wireless. The netbook has very impressive looks. Also, the since it has a pretty wide keyboard, it is a joy to type onto it. Verizon Wireless was also smart to add a Qualcomm Gobi chipset, which lets the netbook work on Verizon’s fast EV-DO Rev.
Skype performed without any problems and did not show any sluggishness in the tests. Well, there are not going to be many problems especially, if you are on a XP machine. Had they gone for Vista, I am sure we would have heard a lot of complains from the users about its ‘poor performance’.
The only minus point to me is its resolution, which is 576 pixels in height. This can lead to problems like dialog boxes not being able to fully fit inside the screen. This is the same problem that I used to face on my old EEE 701, which had just 480 pixels in height. Some users will also complain about the position of the left and right click buttons. These buttons are on the sides of the trackpad instead of being at its bottom. Battery life is also nothing to talk home about: somewhere between 2-3 hours.
Overall: An average netbook
