F88 Netbook – packed with VIA Nano CPU, VX855 chipset & HDMI port!

From outside, the F88 netbook looks a lot like the Asus EEE PC 1002HA, but from inside, it is quite different. It uses a VIA Nano CPU (instead of an Atom processor) and VX855 chipset. It also comes equipped with an HDMI port which is capable of outputting HD video, which is also absent in most of the netbooks. Other than that, it comes with 802.11b/g/n Wifi, a 1.3MP webcam and Bluetooth (optional) and 3G (optional).

How to: Recover using recovery partition in EEE 1002HA

There are two ways to recover bakc to factory settings:

• using restore DVD
• using restore partition

The hidden restore partition contains the restore image of the Windows XP home. To recover using this method, follow the following steps:

1. disable boot booster in BIOS.
2. press F9 key during the bootup
3. this will make your EEE to boot into recovery console
4. you will given the warning that the recovery process will delete all the data
5. click on ‘tick’ button to start the recovery process. It should take about 5 minutes to complete the recovery process

commentary: this is a great step by ASUS to let the users to recover back to factory settings when they do not have access to the external DVD drives. Also, it is a faster way to get back to a working system in case something went horribly wrong with the OS.

ASUS EEE 1002H released!

After releasing EEE 1000HE, which was an incremental upgrade for the EEE 1000H (better keyboard, more battery juice), ASUS has silently rolled out EEE 1002H, which is basically an upgrade version of the EEE 1002HA, which we reviewed a week back.

So, what has changed? Since I have EEE 1002HA with me, the differences were easy to notice:

• Chicklet keyboard: The ASUS EEE 1000HE’s keyboard has been inherited to the EEE 1002H. This keyboard looks and feels like the keyboards that are found in macbooks and some VAIOs.
• Better processor: The 1002HA has the N270 processor. The new 1002H comes with N280 Atom processor.

What has not changed? The battery is still 4200mAh li-polymer battery. While this battery should give you 3.5 hours to 4.5 hours easily, it would be difficult for it to achieve 6 hours plus battery life, which is becoming a standard feature in netbooks now.

EEEbuntu on ASUS EEE 1002HA – works fine!

The EEEbuntu works just fine on the EEE 1002HA. Just make sure that you select EEE 1000H from EEEbuntu config and you will be all set to enjoy EEEbuntu on your EEE PC. Everything works (incl WiFi) just the same way it works on the EEE 1000H. Here is the screenshot of EEEbuntu running via live DVD.

Disk Performance comparison: EEE 1000HA V/S EEE 1000H V/S EEE S101

HDD performance of 1002HA is slightly better than 1000H. However, S101 nails both of them as it uses SSD.
