Lenovo Skylight review

Tech correspondent of the Singapore Daily, Darry Kang was lucky enough to get his hands on the impressive Lenovo Skylight Smartbook. According to his initial impressions, the flash is supported by the browser but it is slow as molasses in January. Heck, it could not even playback a YouTube video nicely. This is a shock to us as in our review, the HTC HD2 (also powered by Snapdragon) that we reviewed sometime back did not show any lags when playing back a YouTube video. Let's hope they fix this bug as-soon-as-possible because this smartbook is all about web-browsing.

CULV or Intel Atom processor: A Comparison

From the past couple months, we have seen an incredible rise in the usage of the CULV processors in the notebooks, especially the ultra-slim ones from MSI.(MSI X400, MSI X610, HP DM3, Wind U120 and so on)CULV processors are more powerful than the Intel Atom processors even at lower clock frequencies. ASUS EEE T91 has a non-replaceable battery – Why ASUS, why?

The term "Non-removable battery" is quite often used in case of Apple products, but looks like ASUS has started following their path too. After using internal battery in ASUS EEE 1008HA, ASUS has decided to do the same in EEE T91 tablet.Removable battery makes so many things simple for the end-user like:

He need not go for the expensive official battery after the battery worns off after an year or so
He won't have to go to service center just to get the battery replaced
He cannot carry extra-batteries for those long trips
He can use extended batteries

Commentary: Naturally, a lot of people, who were very interested in the T91 have become very annoyed due to fact that T91 does not comes with a removable battery. Not a lot of people wish to spend $150+ on a battery alone. Most of the third party batteries are sold under $60, which are well in-reach of a normal consumer. ASUS needs to understand that fact soon, otherwise they will loose a lot of potential customers.

ASUS total netbook line to be slashed to just 3 netbooks

ASUS has pretty odd down plans coming up for the next few months as they are planning to reduce the total lineup of the ASUS EEE PCs to just THREE MODELS. All will be running Windows XP and will come equipped with 160GB HDD. Which three are they going to be? It was not a job figuring out the models though. First is the just released EEE 1008HA followed by 1005HA, which is basically same as 1008HA but with removable battery and an extra USB port. Third will be their first netbook-cum-tablet, the T91.ASUS has pretty odd down plans for the coming months as they are planning to reduce the total lineup of the ASUS EEE PCs to just THREE MODELS. EEE 1000HE is one of the netbooks in the world, which can give you 7+ hours of battery life in real world use. This is sad, really sad.

Top 10 reasons you should NOT get a SONY VAIO P

Over-Priced: We fully understand the fact that it is SONY. But, paying so much for a device that performs so poorly does not make any sense
Super high resolution: What is the point of giving the user super high resolution in an 8-inch screen? Is SONY under some contract of putting so outrageous resolutions in small screens? Looks like they learned nothing from their UX series which squeezed 1024x600 pixels in an 4.3-inch display
HDD not easily upgradable: Although we do not upgrade the HDD everyday, but it should be easily swappable in case something goes wrong with the HDD or if the user wishes to use SSD
Non-upgradable RAM
Poor performance by the entry level model: 1.33GHz simply chokes while running Vista
Even entry level model costs nearly twice as much as other netbooks in the market
Making the entry level model bundle with Windows Vista
Whole device is built around the keyboard and not anything else: I guess the engineers at SONY did not use the device for more than 5 minutes.
Trackball: Trackpad is the way to go.
Below-average or just average battery life with the standard battery: Even if the SONY is entering so late in the netbook market, it should have already made out that the people want netbooks with REALLY good battery life. Netbooks with 2-3 hours battery life are things of past now.

Do yourself a favour and get something on which you can really work upon.

Aware A-View netbook

Aware electronics is a Taiwanese based company, is showcasing its 7-inch netbook that has a detachable screen at the 2009 Electronics and Components China Sourcing Fair organized by Global Sources. The netbook is very cheap and retails at mere $150. The specifications are not impressive at all. It comes with just 512MB RAM and 8GB SSD for storage. The user has the choice to choose between either Windows OS or Linux OS.Aware has plans to push their netbook in the emerging markets. That said, they have already made the Aware availbale in developed nations of Europe.Netbook with detachable keyboard clears one thing for sure that the netboook is equipped with a touchscreen. I wonder why such design has not been so far used in the netbook industry. I hope it does not come with the 3-cell battery like the older A-VIEW netbooks.The Fair is taking place in Hong Kong and ends today (April 15, 2009).

Intel Atom Z520 processor for such a premium laptop/netbook? Why ASUS, why?Also, for the first time, ASUS is giving the user the option to opt for the Windows Vista (basic version). Do not get scared, XP version is still available.
