HP first to implement Atom N470 in their netbooks
HP is going to be first manufacture to offer Atom N470 processor option for their netbooks. This processor runs a hair faster than the Atom N450 that is being used in most of the modern netbooks. HP Mini 5102 and Mini 2101, being the most customizable, are going to be first ones to use it.
Rest of its specs look like this – 10.1-inch display, 1024×600 resolution (1366×768 on Mini 5102), Intel NM10 chipset, 2GB RAM, VGA port, 160GB/250GB/320GB hard disk and optional Broadcom HD chip.
Unfortunately, there is no news on how much the new processor would add to the price tags.
Intel announces Atom N470
Intel has introduced the Atom N470 processor which is a hair faster than its sibling, Atom N450. This new processor runs at 1.83GHz and will soon show up in the upcoming netbooks.
Expected price is going to be around the entry level CULV Celerons

ION 2 Pinetrail netbook by Acer to land very soon!
According to digitimes, NVidia has been given orders from Acer to make ION 2 based chips to support Pine Trail processors. The ION 2 graphics platform which expected two times more powerful than the current one.
This is, undoubtedly, the biggest hint that we can get from Acer regarding their upcoming pine-trail netbook that will also sport ION GPU.
Pine Trail processors include Atom N450, N470, D510 and D410 CPUs. Acer’s ION equipped Revo has been a hit among consumers and Acer expects the same for the upcoming ION-based netbooks too.
Vendors to launch Atom N450 based netbooks on January 11, 2011
Major netbook players that include Asus, Acer, Lenovo and MSI are planning to launch their Atom N450 based netbooks immediately after Intel launches the Atom N450 on January 10, 2010. Malata will also commence shipping to its clients in Europe and US on January 11, 2010.
These Atom N450 based netbooks will be available with 3 types of OSes: Windows 7 starter, Moblin Linux and Windows XP. Netbooks with Linux are, undeniably going to be a cheaper than the rest two.
Atom N470 will be unveiled in March 2010

Atom N470-equipped Netbook can have 2GB RAM – Atom N450 left in dark
Finally, it will be possible to use more than 1GB memory in netbooks. Intel’s upcoming Pine View processor, N470 is faster than the current Atom N280/N270 and runs at 1.83GHz clock speed. It is set to make its debut in March. Based on Pine Trail-M two chip platform has N470 CPU coupled with integrated graphics and NM10 southbridge that has the rest of the chipset.
But this is not the case with N450, an Atom processor scheduled to be launched on January 3rd next year. It will come with Condor Peak Wlan and with 1 to 2GB of DDR2 memory.
Intel suggests to use 20GB to 32GB SSD or 160GB hard disk. The choice of OS is Moblin Linux, but it is not mandatory to use it. The OEMs and manufactures are free to opt other operating systems.
Interestingly, you have to use battery with 4-cells or less and allowed screen sizes are upto 10.2-inches.
Commentary: This is not a good news for the netbook market. Here is few reasons:
- 4-cell battery: Currently, plethora of netbooks are using batteries with 6-cells or some even use 9-cells. Excellent battery life has been one of the core reasons netbooks are so popular. If Intel throws-in such a limit to the mix, it can be hazardous for the netbook market.
- 160GB HDD: It has been just few weeks that manufactures have started to churn-out netbooks that have 250GB or 320GB hard disks.
- 32GB SSD: Imagine the huge Windows 7 installation on that small SSD. Add in the space for pagefile and hibernation and you will be left even less space!
- 10.2-inch screen limit: Not allowing the netbook vendors to use the Atom N470 processor in netbooks using more than 10.2-inch display will hurt Intel only as it will allow the vendors and manufactures to instead use the AMD Neo CPUs. Foolish move, Intel
Atom N470 (1.83GHz) to be launched in Q1 2010
Intel’s next generation processor for netbooks AKA Intel Pine Trail/Pine View will make its debut next year. Now, we have come to know that Atom N470 processor, a pineview CPU that runs at 1.83GHz clock speed is coming in Q1 2010.
Please note that this is still a single-core processor and we will wait for quite some time for Intel to announce dual core processors for its netbooks. The CPU itself has 6.5W TPD which is more than double more compared to N270 1.6GHz Atom, but you have to remember that Atom N470 has 200MHz IGP integrated and the TDP is now calculated for both chips
