Archos 9 Internet Tablet and Linux – hit and miss story

Archos 9 Internet Tablet is a great device for surfing. Many people opted for it as they were tired of waiting for the Apple’s tablet. But, there is some uber geeks who love to put on Linux on every kind of computer they own. lintweaker, proud owner of Archos 9 installed Fedora 11 Linux on it and he was able to get everything working right out-of-the-box except for the fact that he was not able to get the touch screen to work. Also, the resolution got stucked at 1024×600.

Commentary: It is not surprising to see touchscreen not being supported as the Linux distributions are not much famous for supporting touch screen devices.

Archos 9 finally available

Archos 9 finally available

Archos 9 is now finally available in the market. It is one of the first tablets in the market that come with Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS. Archos 9 has a 8.9-inch LED backlit 1024 x 600 resolution and comes with 60GB hard disk with the option to opt for the higher capacity 120GB hard disk. At 500 euro, it may be a bit expensive, but then it is not a netbook. It is a tablet with netbook-innards. How? Because it runs Atom Z510 processor that runs at 1.1GHz clock speed. It also has 1.3MP webcam, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and WiFi. Its Lithium-ion battery should give you a run time of 5 hours.

That said, we think it is big and heavy to carry around. Weighing 800 grams and having a big screen won’t be easy as carrying a netbook where the screen is always protected by its lid.
