Touchpad Is Leading Non-iPad Tablet sales
In the continuing saga of the HP Touchpad, which was drastically reduced in price after early reviews slated bugs in its webOS operating system, HP has managed to secure 17% share of sales of all non-iPad tablets, according to NPD Group. Of the 2 million non-iPad tablets sold, 204,000 were sold by HP. Obviously the figures are distorted by a fire sales – the Touchpad was sold for $99 – but they point to the strength of demand for low-cost quality tablets. Manufacturers take note.
The figures also indicate that HP now has a wide user base should it choose to channel its energies into firmware updates or software for the discontinued Touchpad. After sales of accessories are factored in, the non-iPad market totals $700 million, and surveys suggest 76% of consumers who bought these tablets hadn’t even considered buying an the premium-priced iPad. Samsung – who took second place with 16% of the market – will be hoping to increase that share significantly with HP apparently out of the game, at least for now. Elsewhere in the top five are Asus (10%), Motorola (9%) and Acer (9%).
