NOOK Tablet – closer look

NOOK Tablet

Barnes and Noble has recently released their newest addition to their already popular ereader lineup, the NOOK Tablet. Of course NOOK Tablet is not just an ereader, it’s an android tablet, that besides ebook reading, also lets you watch videos, or stream your favorite shows from Hulu or Netflix, listen to music via free Pandora radio app, browse the net, and play some games.

We have to stop just short of calling it a full-fledged android tablet, as it has very limited third party apps. There are no Twitter or Facebook apps, but NOOK Tablet does have some useful apps like the NetFlix app. NetFlix’s app was only recently released and it allows user to scroll through page after page of videos, top recommendations, and various categories.

Upon loading up the video, the experience is amazing. On this 7-inch IPS display with 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, the picture is perfect. Adobe Flash is no problem, the screen supports pinch-to-zoom and double-tapping. There are no back, menu or home buttons, like on android tablets, but you can swipe across the screen to get yourself back.

Barnes and Noble shop is full of books, magazines, and apps. The eBook app is limited in terms of fonts and colors, but hitting the little book button above gets you where you need to go to choose the right book. NOOK Tablet offers support for EPUB titles, so you can also copy and paste your own books into it. Using Overdrive service you can also use NOOK Tablet to read books from your local library. Storage wise Tablet offers only 16GB , but with microSD card you can add up to 32GB more.

Below the screen there is a toolbar that allows you to maneuver between home, library, shop, search function, apps, web browser and your settings.

The NOOK Tablet is a simple and efficient tablet for getting around your email, browsing, watching videos, listening to music, checking pictures, or some very basic apps. It can hardly be compared to an Android tablet like the Samsung Galaxy 8.9, or the 7-inch Blackberry Playbook but for $249 it does qualify as a budget tablet and a great eReader.

The NOOK Tablet is released November 18th.
