Gigabyte has announced updates to its Inte Atom range, which includes the 10-inch Windows slate and its 10-inch convertible netbooks, which flip between notebook and slate mode.

The updated Gigabyte S1081 will pack an Intel Atom Cedar Trail processor, which is manufactured on a 32nm architecture, bringing the Atom range up to spec with full-sized Sandy Bridge architecture, which are also manufactured on a 32nm die.

The S1081 will offer either 500GB spinning hard drive or pacier solid state disk and will feature USB-3 functionality and the latest Bluetooth 4.0 low-energy connectivity. The Gigabyte S1081 will also sport a 1.3MP webcam.

It’s a pretty decent spec sheet for a tablet, but that modest Atom PCU will anchor it firmly in the B-league, especially as quad-core slates start to reach market.

Gigabyte also offers an optional docking station with DVD burner and stereo speakers with stereo subwoofers, but for our money, now what was the phrase – ‘you can’t make a pig’s ear out of a sow’s purse’, or something like that.
Gigabyte T1006MFew people prefer an onscreen keyboard to a physical one, and so Gigabyte is also releasing its T1006M convertible tablet, with a 10-inch 1366 x 768 pixel capacitive diaplay with a trusty QWERTY keyboard. The 1006M can be used in netbook mode or simply flip the screen around and fold it down for tablet usage. It too features USB-3 data transfer, but let’s hope the Atom CPU will at the very least be the 1.86GHz version. We’ve already seen how insignificant the performance gains of the 1.6GHz N2600 Cedar trail were over the last-gen Atom processors in benchmarks.
