Reliance Netconnect versus Tata Indicom Photon+ – which is better?
Both Reliance and Tata Indicom came up with the term Mobile Broadband together. This left all the other players like Airtel and Vodafone in the dust that kept you wanting for 3G. So, in India, the Mobile Broadband has finally landed. Both Reliance and Tata offer pretty similar plans, but which one is faster (and better)?
In our tests, the Tata Indicom’s Photon surpassed Reliance Netconnet. However, that does not means that Reliance Netconnect is slow by any means. The Tata Indicom gave us more than 1Mbps speeds in most of the areas in New Delhi, while Reliance was not even able to pass 1Mbps.
The speed of Reliance was in between 0.3Mbps and went upto 0.9Mbps. On the other hand, the Tata’s speed was between 0.6Mbps to 1.3Mbps. That said, we were able to stream Youtube HD video without any problems in both of the mobile broadband connections.
One more thing to consider, however this applies only if you are a Linux user. The Tata Indicom Photon’s profile is built into Ubuntu (we used 9.04) and you do not have to install anything to make it work under Linux. Unfortunately, this is not the case with Reliance Netconnect, which was not even recognized under Linux. You will have a tough time in making the Reliance to work with Linux, whereas the Tata’s Photon will work without any problems in Linux.
To conclude, you can go for either if you are not a Linux user. However, if you are a linux user, you have no choice but to go for Tata Indicom Photon. Strikingly, the price of dongles in either case are same, Rs 3500 that come with 1 year warranty too.
Here is a screenshot showing Tata Indicom Photon’s download speed.
..and here are speed test results from Reliance Netconnect

DEAR SIR
THIS IS DIBYENDU FROM BILASPUR .I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I BUY TATA OR RELIENCE PHOTON WHAT WOULD BE THE MONTHLY EXPENDITURE FOR UNLIMITED USE(SURFING AND DOWNLOAD)
Both do not offer unlimited surfing.
i am also one of the victim of the reliance netconnect i bought the connection at december and i closed the connection on janauary but he never stopped me sending me bill i went to the reliance world again and again but there was just a consolidated response they say “dont worry” its not a problem we will do it right.
finally i got a notice from court to be present before lokadalath i was shocked then i again went to the reliance world the answer was the same finally i have to pay 3000/ rs without any mistake of mine. there are 1000s of people who daily come to the lok adalath daily all are reliance company victims.
The reliance is the biggest frauds i have paid 3000/ rs without any reason the actual fault was the companies but i was the victim.
how do you think that they have the crores this is the reason. Never go to any reliance postpaid or prepaid products. this is a kind request to all indians never buy these frauds products.
I AM INTERESTED TO HAVE NETCONNECT CARD WITH FAST SPEED
PLEASE ADVISE

Can anyone tell me that how much download speed do you get if u r using reliance netconnect and if i m downloadin arnd say 5000-6000 MB monthly how much would it cost me in post paid option????
If I on high speed network, I get between 600kbps to 1Mbps. If you are downloading 5-6GBs (as stated by you), you would need to enroll yourself for 10GB plan (the max that Reliance offers)
i want to buy a wireless net connect modem with an unlimited plan but i m confused to buy which one my choices are
1: tata photon+
2: reliance net connect
plz tell me about there speeds & charges on unlimited plans
Both of them offer good speeds. I would suggest you to ask the sales person of both reliance and tata to come to your home so that you can give each of them a try
Reliance netconnect broadband+ works out of box on Linux.
Just use the same “tata indicom” name as provided by ubuntu. It does not make a difference as long as their is a valid ppp driver. Modem is Huwaei ec1260.
Speed is around 1.5mbps+ most of the times. Fast download speed achieved is around 320KB. This is inoutskirts of Bangalore.
Mine is not even detected by the Ubuntu 9.04. On the other hand, Tata Indicom was right away detected
Reliance Netconnect works on ubuntu. i have installed that
not the one that is available
photon+-really bad speeds.even youtube videos buffer.sometimes the speed comes down to 10kbps,which is worse than gprs also, and it disconnects a lot.
Photon+ iz c()()| man!
Respected Sir,
I am already in possession of Photon+. My problem I am not getting bills, save and except twice in my email after long persuation. Possibly people in the Anmdhra Circle are in league with Reliance and hence they are not sending the bil despite repeated requests. It is simply obnoxus, unethical, all the Ramlingamraju way.
I have chosen your forum being disgusted and frustrated, every time I can not report to the Tata House for these flimsy matters. If it is happening with me, it is also happening with others too. Tatas can not do business at Andhra Pradesh as it’s employees( without prejudice ) are in league with Reliance possibly. If it wrong I shall be the happiest person. I took this Photon+ for teaching my students in the MBA class, to enrich their knowledge. But! all in vain.I am trying my best to educate these Andhra Boys & Girls to the best possibilities be compatiable with the B schools and for that Photon+ was required. But! now I am simply in cogmaire neither I can use it nor I can leave it, and therefore, reverted back to Airtel Broad Band. What a Customer Care under the Aegis of TATAs. Bad name for these pople, and people only.
Thanks

I track my usage online
@surya – you mentioned reliance netconnet broadband+ works out of box.
i have mint 8 installed, there i already see a reliance and tata photone profile created but none works for my reliance netconnet broadband+.
it tries to connect after some time it shows you are disconnected.
pls help
Reliance NetConnect offers poor speed n dont ask about customer care. For slow speed they gives reasons that its because of your system only………
Sir,
Can you please tell me which one will be better photon+ or netconnect. I want to use it in suburban areas of west bengal(apart from kolkata). which one will be better in terms of speed.
will i need a tata indicom connection beforehand?
Would not you be getting a connection with the dongle?
i got reliance broad band + before 1 month the rates are so high if reliance provide unlimited plans for broadband+ it will be usefull
Guys reliance service really sucks,
I got I Broadband Plan of 10GB night and 1GB day usage.
I bought the card on 11th of month and got the bill on 22nd of month.
Reason given of Reliance customer care was ” Sir its your Billing Cycle”
Its worked fine for a week, then it never gave me 3.1 Mbps as promised,
Within one month the Datacard stopped working, I registered a complaint (n hv done it for “N” number of times since the, but no joy)
Its been more than two months now that the card is not working, still Reliance is charging me for that.
The reponse from the Customer care is very slugish.
Overall the billing people harass me every month.
Finally I have decided to move on to Consumer Court.
People beware of Reliance Broadband.
People never buy Reliance Netconnect…biggest cheaters roaming in the market…i bought it last week..reliance people said speed will be upto 3.1 mb..but the speed never crossed even 256kbps…’n’ number of complaint to consumer service..but no help…fedup
