Prototype of a flexible smartphone has been introduced by Samsung at the CES in Las Vegas.
Samsung has been using brand Youm for all its flexible display products since summer of last year. Flexible display technology is very much in developmental stages. Its progress is hampered by capabilities of current processors. Current Glass technologies applied to protect the display are not applicable in flexible display development as glass simply gives in to pressures applied. Corning, maker of Gorilla Glass is currently working on flexible glass called Willow for such purposes. In fact next Samsung Galaxy S4 as well as new iPhone 6 are said to feature Willow flexible display.
Recent developments and improvements in flexible technology allowed Samsung to talk to Google about creating an android OS suited for flexible Youm display. Some of the presentation pieces in Samsung booth have flexible displays. A prototype smartphone was shown off flexing and bending without any distortion on display.
Samsung’s keynote presentation of flexible display technology featured former US president Bill Clinton, who celebrated ‘transformative power of technology’ especially in developing nations.
