Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos

Coming first to India on February 1st, this 5-inch phablet is a mid-range android smartphone offered at a somewhat premium price.

It is unusual, but welcome move by Samsung to introduce new device in an emerging market. Galaxy Grand Duos have been introduced in New Delhi and will be in stores next week for Rs 21,500 ($400). There is however a tough competition in India when it comes to phablets. Indian market is in fact flooded with popular 5-inch phablets at various price points. Samsung Galaxy Note II sells well primarily because of its grand specs, but there are plenty of mid range smartphones available at a lower buck.

Recently launched Micromax A116 Canvas HD for example sports better specs and comes at much lower price ($280). Micromax sports a quad-core 1.2GHz MediaTek MT6589 chip and 5-inch IPS display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 294 ppi pixel density. In comparison Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos for $400 has 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor and 5-inch WVGA display with meager 800 × 480 pixel resolution and 187 ppi pixel density.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos phablet’s other specs include 1GB of RAM, 8MP rear and 2MP front camera, built-in storage of 8GB expandable via microSD (up to 64GB) and same 2,100mAh battery. Connectivity is handled via WiFi 802.11b,g,n, 3G, and Bluetooth 4.0. Ports include USB 2.0 and microUSB, capable of USB charging as well as connecting to an external storage device. Duos runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS. There will be a single SIM card and double SIM card model available.

To spice the offer up a bit Vodafone offers 2GB/month data for free for two months. Galaxy Grand phablet seems like a nice enough device but I fear the price point will turn few people away and 2 months of free data may not cut it.
