Kal-el quad core for tablets by NVIDIA
NVIDIA aims to bring the quad core chip into the mobile territory by late 2011. The project is currently under the name Kal-El and was introduced in the Mobile World Congress recently. A working prototype of the chip was shown. The chip will be available by August and smart phones carrying it by December. This Project Kal-El will utilize the quad core chip. They also have the 12 Core GeForce GPU. While a lot of mobile devices can handle 1080p well, this new chip is capable of handle 1440p video and display of 2560×1600. Compared to the Tegra chip, the new chip was said to offer 5 times more power and 3 times more in graphics. What it offers is a more energy efficient chip that utilizes less but offers more. This is due to the 4 cores that run on lower voltage and the clock speed runs at the same performance level as single or dual core.
NVIDIA has not stated if the new chip will be dubbed the Tegra 3 but it is basically a successor of Tegra 2. NVIDIA however is still sticking with their superhero theme since Kal-El is the kryptonian name of Superman. Other new chips will be called Wayne, as in Batman’s Bruce Wayne, Logan of X-Men and Stark of Ironman. The chips will come once per year and it has been said that Stark will offer even more functionality at 75 times more efficiency than Tegra 2.
Check out this video in which Carmack showed the assembled journalists a 2560 x 1600 video on a 30-inch monitor that was being driven by a Kal-El Tablet.
Here in this video we can see Android version of the game Great Battles Medieval running on a Kal-El tablet. As you can see Tegra 2 slacks.
In this video Kal-El web surfing speeds are matching the speed of a Core 2 Duo PC.
Kal-El is also very energy efficient. It will use less power than today’s Tegra 2. Kal-El was also refered to as Tegra 3. Nvidia hasn’t decided on that name just yet, but it is pretty certain that Kal-El will be the driving processor on hottest tablets and most powerful phones in third quarter of 2011.
