Hands On: Blackberry Playbook

  • Sharebar

RIM just released the Blackberry Playbook and some have the opportunity to check out the device for the rest of us. The device IS nice. The user interface is quite unique and though it does have some glitches and the screen is not 100% intuitive, you can easily learn how to manage and handle the device in a few seconds. One example of this is swiping up. When you swipe up, you will be able to reveal the application launcher. If you swipe down from the top, it will reveal some extra options. If you are watching a video, you can swipe down from the top screen so that you can view other videos.

If you want to end a program, all you need to do is pull the application launcher from below. Then, you tap the program that you wanted to terminate. Flick it up to the top screen. There are some operating systems that offer multitasking support but the applications that are not on the foreground are like in a state of deep freeze as it lay down there, motionless, the Blackberry Playbook is much more active since the applications that are on the background remain moving and functioning while using another application in the fore. For some reason it does not make sense but it is amazing that I could run both at once.

Looking at the response and functionality of the interface as well as the core applications, you can say that the Blackberry Playbook is quite impressive. The question now is if the developers will be attracted to use the platform and make applications for the Playbook. Without applications that can back up the core device, the Blackberry Playbook will be of limited use since today, tablets are not just media players anymore or iPod Touch in steroids kind of devices. If it were a few years back, this would have been impressive as it is. RIM also revealed a number of cases that you can accessorize the Playbook with. As of the moment, there are no dates yet as for the formal release of the device to the market and how much it will fare. Nonetheless, it is a pretty nice product to have if you are an avid Blackberry user or if you just want something different. Nonetheless, we will be waiting till the device is released or maybe when someone else nabs the opportunity to test run the product.
