Record breaking downloads and device activations

2012 tablet sales

Last week of 2012 showed historical numbers for both app downloads and new device activations for iOS and android.

Peter Farago of Flurry surmised

“The last week of 2012 was the largest week for both new device activations and app downloads in iOS and Android history,”

Christmas week saw about 1.07 billion iOS and android downloads. In the week of December 25 – 31, the number of downloads jumped by 65 percent to 1.76 billion downloads. In United States alone there were 604 million apps downloaded. China followed with 183 million apps that week and U.K. with 132 million downloads.

In the last week of 2012 over 50 million tablets and smartphones were activated, but Chitika stats show that this week iPad traffic dipped by 7.14 percent to 78.9 percent. In fact there was only one other tablet that showed decrease in web traffic and that was BlackBerry Playbook. Kindle Fire usage however showed increase of 3.03 percent to 7.51 percent of all tablet traffic. Samsung Galaxy tablets showed moderate improvement in web traffic to 4.39 percent. Nexus and other tablets improved as well.

iPhone 5′s traffic, holding just over 8 percent web traffic share, grew by 1.11 percent beating Samsung Galaxy SIII’s traffic which grew by 1 percent. SIII holds 4.3 percent of web traffic share.
