Model A of Raspberry Pi mini PC featuring 700MHz Broadcom chip with USB port and 256MB of RAM is now out. ‘Europe distribution only’ restriction applied to Raspberry Pi A is to be lifted soon.

A year after launch of Raspberry Pi Model B, Model A is finally making headways in Europe.

Raspberry Pi is a stripped down mini PC that made headlines last winter when strong demand for it overloaded servers and the entire stock was sold out in mere hours. Model B is a circuit board with 700MHz ARM 11 processor, Ethernet, and USB, selling for $35.

In months following release of Model B we heard of Raspberry Pi collaborating with Cryptocat encryption software for secure chat communications. Running a Linux operating system capable of decoding 1080p video, Raspberry Pi was used to port ZX Spectrum emulator to run Spectrum games. Raspberry Pi has been used as cheap access to the internet. Raspberry Pi has sparked a wide interest not only among young future computer scientists, but also among other OEMs like Intel, which produced Intel NUC with higher specs and Hardkernel ODroid-X.

Model A has lighter specs than model B to consume less energy and it cost $10 less. Raspberry Pi Model A has been designed to consume as little power as possible in order to be powered by a solar panel or a small battery. Although we’re not sure how much power it needs, Model A is said to consume about a third of power needed to run Model B.

Raspberry Pi Model A is to arrive in US shortly and will be sold online as soon as necessary paperwork has been filed.

Raspberry Pi Foundation’s Liz Upton said,

“We are very, very pleased to finally be able to offer you a computer for $25. It’s what we said we’d do all along, and we can’t wait to see what you do with it,”
