Family desktops are likely be complimented rather then replaced by tablets. According to Gartner’s survey, there have been about 4.9 percent weaker PC sales in Q4 of 2012 compared to year earlier. More Tablets than Laptops are bought these days and certainly more than desktops.

Gartner’s analyst Mikako Kitagawa explained

“Tablets have dramatically changed the device landscape for PCs, not so much by ‘cannibalizing’ PC sales, but by causing PC users to shift consumption to tablets rather than replacing older PCs. Once we imagined a world in which individual users would have both a PC and a tablet as personal devices, we increasingly suspect that most individuals will shift consumption activity to a personal tablet, and perform creative and administrative tasks on a shared PC. There will be some individuals who retain both, but we believe they will be exception and not the norm. Therefore, we hypothesize that buyers will not replace secondary PCs in the household, instead allowing them to age out and shifting consumption to a tablet.”

Kitagawa also mentioned that the PCs that are more likely to be replaced are the ones with weaker specs. In other words, more people are going to use tablets for casual use, like checking emails and surfing and keeping more powerful desktops for resource intensive operations like gaming and multitasking. Demand for heavier configurations will result in PCs being more expensive.

Windows 8 did not have a significant impact on sales of PCs in 2012, but that is likely to change this year and vendors really around touch enabled detachable, convertible and touch enabled notebooks.

All in One solutions are to become much more popular as desktop replacements. Up to 20 percent increase in sales of AiO dekstops is expected in 2013. The touch-screens are not to have a major impact on price and demand for AiO desktops solutions.
