HP/Palm Topaz and Opal webOS tablets revealed before scheduled launch

  • Sharebar

Upcoming tablet PCs from HP running Palm’s webOS have finally been revealed. And there’s not just one, but a total of two webOS tablet PCs coming. One is codenamed Topaz while the other is codenamed Opal. Both are scheduled for a release some time later this year but will most likely be announced officially by HP in an upcoming Palm press event that has the tagline, “Something big, Something small, Something beyond.”

The “Something big” part there probably refers to the HP Topaz (pictured) which reportedly has a 9-inch touchscreen display. There doesn’t seem to be any buttons at all on its face, so it will most likely rely on multi-touch gestures for operation. Not much is revealed by these leaked internal renders of the HP Topaz, apart from the very sleek outer appearance and the presence of a front facing camera above the touchscreen display. It is said that the HP Topaz will also have a microUSB port at the bottom and a speaker setup that will allow for stereo audio both in portrait and landscape modes.

“Something small” in the tagline mentioned earlier is likely referring to the HP Opal, which is said to have only a 7-inch screen. It is being speculated that it will be a more affordable, lower-end version of the HP Topaz, but both tablet PCs will reportedly have unspecified 1.2GHz processors running inside them and some version of Android, so that at least still makes them similar.

Production reportedly won’t start until June of this year, and that is when units are expected to arrive at Palm HQ before the official release date. Wi-Fi only versions are expected to be available, as well as versions that support either AT&T 3G or Verizon LTE. Info on pricing is currently unavailable.
