Office 365 vs Office 2013

Microsoft Office 365 advantage

Microsoft Office 365 preferred over Microsoft Office 2013

While Microsoft Office 2013 is a desktop software, Office 365 is web based app with cloud attached to it. While Office 2013 licence works for one computer only, Office 365 will come with up to 5 licences.

How much is Microsoft Office 2013 licence? Well, that depends on what you need. Office 2013 starts at $140 for Home & Student version. Office 2013 Home & Business for $220 will have Outlook included. If you want to add Access and Publisher, you need to get Office 2013 Pro for $400.

Microsoft Office 365 has two versions offered; Home Premium and Small Business Premium. Each of these versions come with 20GB of SkyDrive Cloud storage, 60 minutes of free Skype calls worldwide and a brand new Office On Demand feature enabling you to show your desktop software on any PC using Windows 7 or newer. Using your SkyDrive is particularly useful when on the go as all files can be accessed and edited from anywhere with internet connection.

Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium for $100 per year for up to 5 devices, or 5 IDs. This Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium version also includes Office 2013 Pro software for each of PCs used.

Microsoft Office 365 Small Business Premium for $150 for up to 5 licences, but billed individually. Each of these licences for $150 is good for up to 5 PCs and also includes Office 2013 Pro software for 5 computers, each customizable to up to 5 unique Microsoft IDs. Also included in the Business version are Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync.

Microsoft clearly wants you to buy into Office 365 subscription rather than buy one version of Office. PCworld had made an easy calculation showing that if you buy Office 2013 Pro for 5 computers it’d cost you $2000 and that equals to 20 years of Office 365 subscription. Placing Office 2013 Home & Student on 5 PCs will cost you $700, or 7 years worth of of Office 365 subscription. Taking that Microsoft outputs new Office version every 3 or so years, it makes sense to stay with the most current version of Office 365 rather than paying a lot for Office 2013 version.
