Samsung Series 9 Notebook – Preview
The main focus of CES 2012 so far has been a battle between ultrabooks and high-performance tablets. Ultrabooks in CES 2012 entered new territory with dedicated graphics cards being factored into the equation and tablets came of age as quadcore processors coupled with Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS took the tablet experience to a new level.
Samsung announced just such a discrete graphics solution in the Series 5 ultrabook, but even so they seem to have kept the best til last, later unveiling their new flagship notebook, the Series 9. The original Series 9 laptop was brought to market before Intel began to throw its weight (and $300 million dollars) firmly behind the ultrabook drive, and at CES 2012 it has been updated and appears slimmer, faster, and more stylish.
The original Samsung Series 9 was already one of the most slender laptops on the market, and Samsung has pared it down by another 4mm, so that it now measures a mere 12.9mm when closed. Even the 15-inch version is just 15mm thick with the lid down. The proprietary Duralumin aluminum alloy present on the first-gen Series 9 has made way for standard aluminum, which is less prone to scratches and feels sturdier too. Take a look at these awesome pics of Samsung Series 9 ultrabook:
Here is what the Samsung Series 9 sides look like:
Behind the scenes a 1.7GHz i7 CPU and 8GB RAM are teamed with an SSD for extra responsiveness, and the ultrabook cliche of waking from sleep in under two seconds holds good. Samsung has taken the professional route with the screen – a 1600 x 1200 matte display is provided instead of the more vibrant glossy screens seen on other ultras. That’ll help with outdoor working, but the Samsung Series 9 (ultrabook or not) might leave multimedia buffs feeling a bit short-changed. Yet detail is astounding, and the screen is bright, although those blacks aren’t as dark as they might be, so the overall effect is watered down a touch.
