IDS reports that in 2013 more smartphones than feature phones are expected to be shipped.
While China takes a top spot in smartphone shipments this year with 312 million units and 32.8 percent market share, the most vigorous growth predicted in smartphone sector will happen in India. US and UK has over half the population already using smartphones and slower growth is expected. In India, Brazil and China the year-over-year growth will double in coming years. India is expected to ship 155 million units by 2017, which is 459 percent increase to current 27.8 million smartphones. It is predicted that by 2017 more than half of phones in India will be smartphones.
Melissa Chau, IDC’s senior research manager for the Asia Pacific offered this,
“While we don’t expect China’s smartphone growth to maintain the pace of a runaway train as it has over the last two years, there continue to be big drivers to keep the market growing as it leads the way to ever-lower smartphone prices and the country’s transition to 4G networks is only just beginning.”
